I do not like this at all. It gives A LOT of low income families who pay zero in income taxes an undeserved break. It lowers revenue for a social security system that is already in long term trouble.

quote:

Republicans will make the doubled child tax credit in their tax bill partly refundable against payroll taxes, Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, said Wednesday evening, meaning that the tax break will be available to many more low-income families.

The Senate-passed version of the tax bill would have increased the child tax credit from $1,000 to $2,000, but would have limited the benefit for lower-income people by not similarly increasing the portion that would be refundable. Thus taxpayers would get money back from the government even if they didn’t have income tax liability.

Congrats, we just incentivized poor parents to have even more kids.

LINK

The poorest 40% of Americans already get back MORE than they pay in. This stupid addition will make that even more unfair.

The bill is designed to give the wealthy tax breaks.

Why would you think it does anything else?

The fact that having fricking kids is tied to income taxes is mind boggling if you step back and think about it

They need to call it what it is, it isn't a tax cut at that point, it's just welfare.

There's like 20-30% of the population who's net tax contribution is negative. For every $1 they contribute they suck out >$1.

Is literacy or comprehension the issue here?

There aren't many things I care less about when evaluating a policy than whether it lowers government revenue, even if it's something like SS. Besides if a system is impacted by something like that, then the system is the problem, not the thing impacted it.

Be sure to file early, and file often!

Repubs trying to have a version of the Dem mantra on voting. Next thing ya know they'll be encouraging the dead to file too.

Damn. Who put that in there?

Not having the additional credit refundable was a great feature of the bill.

You know, my wife and I only have one child. Because we are smart and live within our modest six figure yearly income, that we both work hard together to earn.

How about you just go to work, pay your taxes like a good citizen and worry about you and yours like we do.

Trust me, you don't want these people's standard of living.

Apparently it is with you. You should try to read up on the rest of the bill to understand the totality of what it accomplishes.

Ridiculous, plenty of poor white trump supporters benefit from this deduction. That's the reason they put it back.

Congressional R's are in a tough spot trying to appease the donors (multimillionaires) while not pissing of their poor white base. I wouldn't be surprised if this whole thing blows up.
