Germany’s chancellor said Thursday she’s willing to back lower tariffs on U.S. auto imports as a potential European Union (EU) concession to the Trump administration – just one day after CEOs of Germany’s biggest carmakers reportedly voiced support for eliminating such tariffs entirely.
quote:
On Wednesday, the chief executives of prominent German auto companies – including Daimler, BMW and Volkswagen – “liked” a Trump administration proposal for both sides to reduce those tariffs to zero, according to German business news outlet Handelsblatt. The proposal was said to have been made by U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell during a meeting at the U.S. embassy.

Merkel is bent over a barrel multiple ways she will fold especially on this.

It's amazing the number of leaders who adamantly oppose Trump on the day that he comes out with his "plans" but yet within a month or so they are doing damn near exactly as what he proposes. Appears some of them should keep their mouths shut until they have had time to digest what he is saying.

Well German automakers don't want tarrifs on US imports because we reciprocate.
They'd rather we have free trade because German autos have always sold well in the US and they aren't worried about American cars in Germany.
They sell like shite. And all over Europe.
Ever try driving an American car in England?
A Camaro would take up both lanes.
Top selling cars in Europe are all German made Volks.
The only American car that sells in Europe is the tiny Ford Fiesta.
They don't buy our big cars but we buy their small cars.
Germany has the European market and a nice chunk of the American market.
Why would they want reciprocal tarrifs, they're not worried about US cars nudging them out of their market in Europe but they sure would like to be on level footing in the US to lower prices and sell more cars.
Merkel would be the biggest idiot on the planet to not completely end tarrifs.
There is a reason all German automakers would love this... they understand the market.

Here is someone who has actually thought this through. It is possible more American cars will sell with no tariffs, but it will not be enough to turn the tide. They know they will own the market there, but will just increase their stock here.
In the end German car makers will win in this, but the optics will say it is a trump victory, and a Merkel/EU loss politically.

Not nearly as many as before with the market wanting SUVs. There is a reason every automaker including Porsche and Bentley have SUVs in the lineup now.

If all this is true why did they have them in the first place and why was it necessary for trump to be the one to suggest they end the tariff?

Here is the ironic twist in all of this. Of the BMWs made in the US, more are sold in Europe and Asia than in the US.
So a German company is paying tariffs on its own cars, course they would like the tariffs to go away.
On another note, this is what Trump has threatened on American companies, to tariff them if they manufacture out of country and then ship back, and the left howls about it. Why, dont we want to do EVERYTHING Europe does, and they are doing it to their companies.

The Chevy Camaro a few years ago cost ($48,000 US) in Germany and the Ford Mustang was $50,000 US for a convertible.
While BMW 4 series was selling for 34,000 US equivalent in Germany.
Europeans see American cars as over-priced for the quality and impractical - eat too much gas and too big for their roads. Lanes are insanely narrow in most of Western Europe.
The tarrif price has to go to Nil for the US to compete in Germany but there's no doubt Germany would be a big winner of the deal but it's better than the status quo for the US.
And German cars aren't going to eat the American market, that is owned by Toyota and Nissan.
Go to any mall in America and all you see is Corrollas and Camrys and Sentras.

They might have skinner roads but we need to stop with this "American cars are too large" BS. God forbid we found out BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Porsche, made large sedans. They also have a large public bus system. Hamster is our Ambassador of all things V8 and I have faith that everyone will be driving Mustangs, Corvettes and Camaros soon.

Still befuddles me how someone could be so removed from reality that they would think it’s a good idea to say something like that on twitter and it NOT be satirical...

I was told by a dipshit poster that Trump sucks at this stuff.

Nearly ever my automaker is seeing their sedan sales slow down while their crossover and truck sales increase.
