They would rather have the credit for tanking it. Those guys are all or nothing.

The Freedom Caucus has to have something to offer that stands a chance of getting passed by Congress.

Right now they have nothing.

And I’m not faulting them for their beliefs in fiscal responsibility. I’m just pointing out the political reality that they have nothing to offer that stands a chance of getting passed by Congress. And until we have more people like them in Congress, this is the best we can do.

Because we have a 3 seat majority in the House and a 2 seat majority in the Senate and a large number of those Republicans are not interested in fiscal responsibility.

That’s the reality of what we’re dealing with right now.

Since the majority red states have a higher percentage of Medicaid recipients than the majority blue states, this may slit their own throats.

Why don't you like minorities?

How many minorities are Republicans?

You suck at making coherent arguments.

SALT is a good bill if any.

Blue states are proposing crazy tax increases probably banking a bit on the rest of the nation to pay for it. Ie CA paying for illegal medical bills, etc

This isn’t a fed issue and state citizens need to hold their state reps accountable for their state/local taxes and not put it on the federal govt and national taxpayers.

Thats not the purpose of SALT. The purpose of salt is to buy swing district votes.

If Johnson was smart (and he’s not) he’d postpone the SALT until next year (an election year), and get it done then.

Freedom Caucus not happy. They say SALT only benefits the rich and people in blue districts with high taxes. In response, they then demand more spending cuts and cuts to Medicaid. Right now, Trump Administration and House leadership is telling them no. Freedom Caucus is saying they will pull their support and tank the bill if their new demands are not met.

What are they actually getting? The NE GOPe are getting the SALT cap increased. What is the Freedom Caucus getting?

That's the problem with these big bills. Everybody gets something and that's the main problem. Until they do smaller bills or single item bills, nothing will really change

Massie is right.

The problem is that a fair number of Comey Republicans (Fitzpatrick and the like) said they will tank the bill if they don't get SALT. And Republicans can only lose 3 people. And Comey Republicans don't care if the government shuts down because they won't get the blame and they don't care if a worse version of the bill ends up being brought in the aftermath because they would actually prefer a worse bill.

Now, Massie has no plan. He has nothing to offer as an alternative. He just points out how SALT sucks. And he's right. But what does he suggest as a practical solution? He's not worried about that because he's not in a leadership position that requires getting stuff done. In fact, I think this is precisely one of the reasons why he doesn't care about being in a leadership position. He doesn't have to come up with real solutions. He just points out the things that suck.

So what to do? Well, the Republican leadership gives the Comey Republicans what they want to get them onboard. And then they try to turn the screws on the Freedom Caucus and offer them some kind of work around or reach around.

That's what you have to do sometimes. Give Republicans a greater majority, a worthy and useful majority, to help bring back more fiscal conservatism. Until then, you have what you have.

This is true

It is, but if they can't get something passed we are going to see the biggest tax increase in American history. Mid terms would be a formality at that point.

That's the biggest issue..

You can't let that happen.

It would destroy the Republicans.

It is only for the rich and people in blue states.

Literally nobody itemizes their deductions on their tax returns in low cost of living states unless you are a high earner.
