This is/was an adaptive reuse project to turn the office space into residential.

Gensler is the architect. 235 GC is the general contractor. Will be interesting to read the post mortem.

I'd be interested to know if imported steel was used vs. domestic. I'm also assuming initial build was per design and spec and the designing Structural Engineer and city Inspectors signed off on the columns and steel size on initial build Design Verification.

I've been involved on retro of existing warehouse type buildings into microelectronic wafer testing or minor chip fabrication. The biggest concern there is load capacity, but more importantly the vibration criteria for chip tools. These aren't high rises however, so easy enough to saw cut footings in slabs and install new column footings for increased column count.

They haven’t been able to sell the sheeple on the xxx Variant of the Chyna virus, so jab sales are way down. Maybe they should bring the Garden Gnome out of the retirement, he was the best salesman they ever had.

Probably not considering that's not what his crew was there to do. They were there doing something about fire protection when they spotted the failures.

And then uses the pulpit to make the case that opting to not use union labor to increase profits is an indication they cut corners on engineering.

And, by the way, where’s the finger pointing at all those city officials who approved the project?

So they are adding on and filling in a corner of the old Pfizer hq to put apts. The engineering firm would've designed it and submitted it the city. So either the engineering was bad and the city missed it as well or the contractor did it all wrong.

I don't understand why there isn't more deformation visible from the outside. For those beams to buckle and rupture like that a lot of deflecting had to happen especially after it gave way.

For that beam to rupture and cripple like that, it was so severely overloaded. What is the factor of safety on building structure? 5? So 5 times that what that beam was capable of.

I'm an airframe stress analyst so our margins are a whole lot tighter than civil. Airframes are required to have a 1.5 factor for an ultimate load. Civil structures are to have a 5 factor IIRC. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
