We weren't not going to invade Mainland Japan as well, regardless of what Russia's intentions may have been.
This is true. Operations "Olympic" and "Downfall" were the code names of the plans for invasion. The Japanese intelligence had correctly surmised that the initial US invasion would occur on the island of Kyushu (Olympic), and were mounting their resources which included not only the naval ships, but more Kamikaze pilots and 120 manned suicide torpedos, and over 100 mini subs each with 2 torpedos. Their army had learned from Okinawa, and had fortifications high in the mountain tunnel caves far out of the reach of navy guns. If America defeated the Japanese on Kyushu, Operation Downfall would have happened during the beginning of a very violent typhoon season. The Japs weren't worried about high casualties, and they were betting the American public wouldn't have the stomach for them. Dropping the bombs saved countless lives and won the war.
The Russians had planned to invade Hokkaido, but to only controlled half of the island and frankly did not have the resources to spare to finish the job after their heavy losses to Germany. Stalin cancelled their invasion plans 2 days before they were to happen.

Your point does have merit. The Soviets had just enacted a massive invasion of Manchuria prior to Hiroshima and they were building up forces on Samhain Island just to the north of Hokkaido.
The atomic bomb was a message to to Russia as it was to Japan.

Those weak MFers should hear the war stories my grandfather told me of what those murdering bastards did to Americans. He said he'd dropped 2 more on them if we'd had them.

It saved millions of Japanese lives just as importantly.

That the Japanese refused to surrender after the first bomb contradicts this.
No it doesn’t. Why not just firebomb more and more and more. No reason to invade. None.

Cool. So leave them isolated.

The attacks on Dresden were no picnic, either.

so, cookies and back rubs instead?

It saved a lot of Japanese lives as well.

The Allies’ unilateral demand of “Unconditional Surrender” — in both Japan and Germany — prolonged the war in both theaters of operation.

This isn't true. Japan has no oil. At the point we nuked them the only thing it saved was time because Japan was a dead man walking. It didn't even save much time because USSR was about to role them in Manchuria too.

Again, some of us aren't consequentialists and have a morality that's a little too Christian to accept the idea of doing evil for an arguably net good result.
You ever dug a foxhole through coral shell and decomposing corpses? Me neither, but I know that damn near every island we took our Marines and Army did that.
What was Ikes and McArthur's options for not bombing Japan?
Are you okay firebombing Japan and Germany killing more people than 1 bomb? Does it matter to you if it is 1 bomb or 2,000 bombs? Same result, though.

I really admire the tenacity of the Japanese. We are softer than chicken shite by comparison

Firebombing Tokyo AND dropping the first nuke didn't work but just more firebombing would have? That doesn't even make sense.
Along with that they still had thousands of planes and miles of bunkers. It would have been at least months more of war and thousands upon thousands of Allied lives.

Why not just firebomb more and more and more.
Do you have a problem with the number of civilians killed, or the method?

None of those worthless fricktards have ever picked up a history book and read about the WW2 era Japanese.

They would sink the ships themselves.

TIL there are 120,000 purple heart medals in storage.
They were all minted in 1945. Every purple heart medal awarded in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq or any other military event from 1945 till today is from the storage of 500,000 made in 1945.

Well my father was serving in the pacific theatre and he surely believed that he may not have come home if not for the bomb. So I guess you want us to think that the men getting ready to invade only believed it would be a bloodbath because they were being fooled by the government.

I heard some of those stories. My father was angry that we let the emperor off. He would have nuked Japan until it glowed
