FL says cities can't ban plastic straws

Yes, we live in a world of having to pass laws to ban bans.
LINK
On a 24-15 vote, the Senate imposed a moratorium on plastic-straw bans....
The House passed the bill (HB 771) last week, meaning it is now ready to head to Gov. Ron DeSantis. If he signs the bill (HB 771), local governments would not be able to enforce any ordinance banning plastic straws until July 2024.
The vote Tuesday in the Republican-controlled Senate was largely along party lines. Democrats Lauren Book of Plantation, Randolph Bracy of Orlando and Bobby Powell of West Palm Beach crossed party lines to vote for the bill, while Republican George Gainer of Panama City opposed it.
Under the bill, the research arm of the Legislature would also be required to conduct a study of “each ordinance or regulation adopted” by local governments related to single-use plastic straws. A report of the study would need to be submitted by December to Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, and House Speaker Jose Oliva, R-Miami Lakes.
Rather than focusing on the environmental impacts of local plastic-straw bans, the study would focus on the “data and conclusions” used in adopting local ordinances.
No ban on plastic straws in this South Florida city
This has irked environmental groups, which argue that sufficient evidence already exists that plastic pollution is detrimental to the environment. When lawmakers considered the proposal in committee hearings, groups often brought up a study by the World Economic Forum that said there will be more plastic by weight than fish in oceans by 2050.
Several South Florida cities have instituted plastic straw bans or are phasing them in, including Delray Beach, Hallandale Beach, Deerfield Beach, Surfside, Coral Gables, Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale.
State lawmakers have also taken aim at other local regulations that were enacted to protect the environment. One of those efforts is in a bill by Sen. Travis Hutson, R-St. Augustine. That bill targets local ordinances that restrict the sale and use of sunscreens containing certain chemicals that studies have found to damage coral reefs.
The bill passed Tuesday by the Senate includes other issues along with the moratorium on plastic-straw bans. It also deals with issues related to recyclable materials.
For the record, plastic straws represent less than 1% of the plastic trash out there. And don't even get me started on 'paper straws...'

Why can't communities, decide locally, to ban straws?

Hank Jr. had a song decades ago about a Coalition To Ban Coalitions. Seems fitting.

I went to Oregon recently and had my first paper straw. Absolute garbage but not surprised liberals would push crap like that on us

I don’t understand why some of you are so emotionally invested in keeping plastic straws around when they effectively last for hundreds of years after just a few minutes use.
Not every environmental idea is some progressive boogeyman out to get you

Full disclosure: I have grown to despise single use plastic for the waste it creates

Because we are emotionally and intellectually mature enough to make our own decisions, have looked at the alternatives, and abhor the nanny state becoming involved in petty little behaviors and decisions. Did you also notice that plastic straws represent less than 1% of the 'plastic problem?!?!'
So, what's your take on disposable diapers?! I'm just waiting for the first municipality to ban those.

In the US alone there enough straws used each year to fill Yankee Stadium 9 times to the brim. Hundreds of millions of straws. Every year. And they will exist long after we are all gone.
The plastic fork you used for a few minutes today will effectively exist forever. The plastic fork you used one time as a child still exists somewhere. All that energy and effectively eternal waste for a few minutes convenience. Every monument created by man will crumble to dust before anything happens to that fork. It is absurd stupidity.
I hate single use plastic. I also hate every level of government. I am trying to reconcile the 2 positions.

That’s because paper is porous, and it would retain some cocaine in the same way it retains some water. And that’s why Florida won’t ban plastic straws.

for me, it’s not that i’m emotionally invested in plastic.
i just have no desire to use an inferior product.
until a new straw that works at least as good, is at least as convenient, and at least as cheap, i’ll keep using the plastic.
i feel the same way about alternative energy sources.
find me an energy source that’s just as reliable, just as affordable, and just as available as fossil fuels, and i’d consider switching.
until then i’ll keep driving my gas guzzling pickup.

Libs want to protect the environment by banning plastic straws, but have to cut down trees to make paper ones.
All of their ideas are so well thought out.
