It's a great idea that will force lenders to do due diligence on not only the individuals they lend to but the majors the borrowers wish to complete. Less $ for SJW majors.

He also wondered why student debt can't be discharged in bankruptcy.

A Fed chairman doesn’t understand the concept of moral hazard?

Move along.

As long as they are not federally guaranteed, I have no problem.

Or you can work and pay your way through school. Not sure why more people don’t do this.

They should and I think they would have if they were better educated on the true cost of the loans. These are children that are signing up for these things. Educate them from a young age about the real cost of going to college and other avenues to make a good living without college, like the hardass with the f250 and the micropenis in here, and we would be much better off.

The taxpayer should not be held accountable for people getting shite degrees and taking out massive to loans to pay for school. Student loans are the root cause of the increase in tuition and proliferation of worthless degrees. The money is too easy to acquire.

Also I'm not paying for the person that took out 100k in loans and spent the money traveling to europe and hitting spring break in Cancun every year.

The irony of a LSU message board disparaging a college education. You need to realize that LSU is a university that happens to have a football team. I think some of you think LSU football just happens to have a university attached to it.

So what would stop a college student from taking out $200k in loans, declaring bankruptcy and getting rid of the loans, then starting their life?

Bankruptcy isn't the scarlet letter it used to be. You can get a credit card immediately after and a home loan 2 years later.

Im not disparaging it. I paid my dues. I just don't think it is for everybody and it's not the only way to be successful.

Anyone with half a brain knows why that should not be the case. Without that, the risk of the loan goes through the roof given that there is no collateral. That makes the rates go way up.

So, does the government want to artificially give more access to higher education, or not? If not, then you make it dischargeable, allow the rates to reach equilibrium with the actual risk, and live with the results.

If you want broad access, you artificially reduce the risk.
