Does anyone here actually believe than an FBI unchecked is going to stop at having them search for child porn?

Child porn? I have zero problem with this, assuming it's rather obvious child porn. And any of y'all that do... well... too bad. It's frickin' child porn. They need to be buried underneath the jail by whatever means necessary.

Most people might not have a problem with it, if not for the concern that while it may be the FBI looking for child porn now, it could be the IRS looking for information next.

Outside of obvious child porn, what happened when someone was turned in for something that might have looked young, but turned out not to be?

If some one is charged, the defendant will have to show in court proof that the individual was of age. If the picture or video has some one that is questionable enough to where some one can reasonably think a child is involved, then the defendant will have to prove otherwise.

Anyone that would take a computer to a repair shop is dumb. There is so much personal information they can pull from it. Computers are cheap enough to just replace if you're incapable of working on one.

I'm wondering what kind of person would send a computer to Apple or the Genius Bar with illegal images (or proof of other illegal activity) saved on the hard drive.

You don't even need to work on one. Most issues are software related. Format the hard drive and reinstall the OS. 99% of problems are solved.

Hell I do that every six months or so anyway just to remove all the bloat.

Exactly. Just keep all of your important shite on an external hard drive that's been encrypted. If your computer fails, everything is backed up and ready to roll. In the off-chance you lose it/it's stolen, your personal information is protected.

Pedos have no rights and should be exterminated with extreme prejudice.

Sorry, cannot agree. Even pedos deserve due process.

So what’s the problem here. The FBI will pay informants that turn over evidence on drug dealers, why is this different?

This doesn’t seem like unwarranted search and seizure. It seems like extremely shitty people being stupid enough to willingly turn over evidence of their crimes to third parties

I don't think this is a 4th amendment violation. You're voluntarily giving your computer to a tech and asking them to fix it, anything illegal discovered in the process is fair game. The fact that the FBI paid them doesn't make it a constitutional violation because such a person could be turned in voluntarily by the geek squad anyway for child porn.

This is effectively no different than a paid drug informant.

Yep

Pull the drive and make it an external on a secure pc and get anything from it you need.

Reinstall drive and format c;

Start over.

The prosecution will first have to prove the individual in question is under age, that whole innocent until proven guilty thing.

If you have naughty stuff like kid touching on your computer and you still fork the computer over to strangers that could and will call the cops if they see it there, you deserve to get thrown in jail just for sheer stupidity like that.
