F King just made a startling point that since 2009, per-student appropriations are down 58%. Tuition and fees have gotten LSU back to +2% over that same period.

The University of Alabama gets a 3-4% appropriation increase every year.

So we should de-fund higher education? That’ll be great for the state’s long term prospects.

You're not seriously going to defend higher ed pricing/budgeting practices of the last 30, 35 years, right?

I'm not for defunding, but the fraud, waste and abuse in Louisiana's higher ed (and we're not alone) is through the roof. How many duplicative and redundant higher ed boards do we need? For that matter, how many 4-year colleges per million people do we need? There needs to be 1 large state university in the New Orleans area, 1 in Shreveport Bossier and the Flagship in Baton Rouge. Lafayette maybe needs to keep a broader range of 4-year programs, but then everything else should be on the LSU-A model - a select few trade-type BA/BS programs (education, nursing, etc.), and then focus the balance of their efforts on 1 to 4 semester vocational programs, associate programs and/or 2-year prep programs to feed the larger schools.

And we should consolidate under the LSU system for all higher public education in the state.

Period. This unlimited funds for worthless degree programs is duplicative, inefficient, wasteful and worse, counterproductive.

In LSU's case, they want protection as the flagship.

Quit gutting the main campus and health science centers in favor of "equal" cuts to all 53148751 post-secondary schools in Louisiana.

They are asking for a standstill budget.

LSU will have a record entering freshman class this year (my kid included), so it will be able to soften the blow. But it's unconscionable that our flagship is so poorly funded when compared to its peers in the SEC.

We should re-appropriate funds from the schools that are nothing but Pell Grant schemes (SUNO) and political patronage factories (most directional schools), to the ones that provide an actual benefit to the state (LSU, Tech).

Several programs should be cut at the directional schools as the first step towards shuddering or scaling back. Some of them can go back to the being the 2 year community colleges they began as. Some should be closed altogether.

State of LA gives funding to some 22 colleges in Louisiana for roughly 4.3 millions citizens.

We need to reduce it down to about 4-5 colleges and revamp our trade schools.

Lets start by closing a few regional schools to protect LSU and give the University the power to set the tuition not the legislature/gov. let's also reform TOPs it was never intended to to be an across the board massive entitlement program like it is today. There is no political will in this state to do what it takes to fix higher ed. in Louisiana. The state is broken, the constitution needs to be rewritten but again tough to find many with the political courage to take on this task.

I don't disagree in principle with this, but until somebody has the balls to try to push something like that through the legislature and get the general public behind it, we are left with an underfunded flagship year after year after year.

No they really aren't.

They are asking for a standstill budget for the state direct funds BUT conveniently neglecting to include additional money they will get from increased fees and tuition.

They are slick that way.

No one needs college, they need knowledge/skills. College is the biggest scam in US history.

YES and concentrate those dollars through quasi-public/private trade schools instead which are cheaper and cultivate bigger job returns. Lack of a skilled trade workers is a real problem in Louisiana. Businesses aren't coming here to open up a division because we have a high number of college educated social workers or history majors.

Not really true. It has been discussed today. The cost of running a university goes up every year. A standstill budget appropriation ignores inflation and equates to a cut over time.

Half the Universties in the State should be shut down and increase Academic standards in the ones that remain open. Also courses and degree programs that offer no benefit to society should be cut. Then bring back trade schools. That would be the best way forward long term.

Please tell us how this can be accomplished in reality. (without the Poli Board assuming dictatorial powers over state government)
