From the "YGBFKM" department...

Unspecified error after F-22 was washed led to crash at Eglin

quote:

A maintenance error that was made after an F-22 Raptor was washed led to its crash near Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, last May, Air Combat Command said Friday.

In a statement to Military.com, the command said that the maintenance mistake affected the fighter's control inputs, although ACC declined to release further details on what went wrong that led to the May 15, 2020, crash such as how the washing of the aircraft was related to the maintenance issue.

The pilot, assigned to 43rd Fighter Squadron, 325th Fighter Wing, began taking off from Eglin that morning before noticing a warning related to the flight control system, Air Combat Command said. The pilot decided to continue the takeoff, but soon started having trouble controlling the plane.

Even as a plan to land the aircraft safely was being put together, the pilot kept having problems with the plane and ejected, sustaining minor injuries, the command said. The $201 million fighter was destroyed.

Alternative headline could be:

Most expensive plane ever built does not work when wet

This isn't an F-35. Although expensive, the Raptor has been as good (or better) as advertised.

What a moronic oversimplified comment.

That F-22 was fine the other day. It even tweeted that it had evidence against Hillary Clinton.

They forgot to dry something off? That's why it crashed?

Worked on hueys and cobras and every 14 day was wash. Also required to pre and post wash lubrication hitting ~30 grease points. Each mos has responsibilities for periodic maintenance requirements, so who knows what the frick up was. Not a fixed wing guru either, so who knows what the mims says.

Wouldn’t affect flight control systems, more so avionics readings.

With how fly by wire things are, especially with how stealth often means you are flying a naturally unstable airframe that is only fly able due to computer corrections, the two may not be as far apart as you think.

I have a push mower that was amazing. Best performing piece of equipment I have ever owned. I washed the underside of the deck one time and it has been shite ever since. Clumps and drops grass out from under the deck when bagging, clumps and drops grass when side discharging.

I get it.

True, I even said I know nothing about fixed wing.

Lemme tell you how the new Huey and cobra was unable to fly in rain because of water getting into the $6M xmsn and the tail rotor. I was second unit to put them in desert combat.

Pitot issues would likely have been noticed preflight/daily/turnaround inspection IMO. Could have been some maintenance to facilitate the special. Lots of things come to mind as possibilities. Again, know nothing about the aircraft.

I'll try that, because it has been heartbreaking seeing it perform like it has. Mowing used to bring me such joy, now it's just incredible frustration.

That pilot had some bad meetings afterward.
