originally the fear was a place for staging troops and weapons that could be used as a fast strike threat, that later turned into threats of missle staging areas

in todays world they are nothing but leaches and offer us nothing but a drag on our resources to support them as vacation resorts fore tourists

Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana should want to retain Puerto Rico for much the same reason that poor Southern Whites supported slavery. At least there was someone ranking below them.

Too lazy to look it up but I think Puerto Rico has about half the GDP of Mississippi

Strategically, PR is our anchor in the Caribbean. It's literally an aircraft carrier, especially with Russian and Chinese influence expansion in the region.

Guam is good for military sites as long as it doesn't tip over.

Our active bases have been closed for decades on Puerto Rico.

It's a great place for The DoD to raise an army of chubacabras.

Should we not Release them like the Great Britain did with much of their territories?

They still own BVI as we own USVI. Hope that does not change.

We can project power into the mid and south Atlantic without needing the navy. It also gives strategic control of the Caribbean basin. It also gives control of the Panama Canal.

Plus, you never give up territory. Ever.

Ever.

Vieques used to be a base for us, used for bombing, its an island off PR. Then some local started protesting, got lots of celebrities from the states involved, protesting, etc.

The govt sold the lease for a song and moved out.

Turns out the local....was a connected politician, bought the lease for a song....and its now a beautiful resort.

Didnt have shat to do with bombing, it was the real estate deal of the century. Course you never hear those idiot celebrities like Ricky Martin admit they were used like a red headed stepchild.

I lived for two years in ponce where the earthquakes are happing. the bulk of the people are very good folks. there are some bad ones no different than major cities in the us. the thing that holds them back is the quest for free money. liability lawers surround every for profit business. government handouts are way to numerous. the tax base is limited with minimum industry. natural resources are limited to sun and beaches offset by hurricanes.
