I really can’t think of one.
It seems the only benefactor are the Ricans
Are we worried about Russia, China, or another actor setting up shop off the US coast in the year 2020?
Should we not Release them like the Great Britain did with much of their territories?

Dead weight but liberals love them and wish they could vote.

“You aren’t as pretty as when we met, and I don’t love you anymore. Hasta la vista, babe.”

There is no benefit but they would become Haiti over night if we cut them off

Mick Jagger one said something about "Puerto Rican girls thats just dyin' to meet ya".
Would that still be true if we cut them loose?

Well, China was in unsuccessful negotiations to buy Greenland, maybe they would be glad to settle for Puerto Rico with it's more favorable climate.

Guam is a strategically important airbase and military facility for projecting US power in Asia

Um...where was Guam being mentioned?
Rico is not Guam from a strategic point of view. At freaking all.
So again I ask, what is the point of Rico to the US in 2020?

That Puerto Rican punk'll go down!
And when he's hollered uncle we'll tear up the town!

It said what is the benefit of US Territories?.... and I simply pointed out one of the benefits.
Guam is a US territory as is Puerto Rico

Guam is a US territory. It was entirely reasonable to show hat there indeed ARE US territories that provide a net benefit.

It would take a LOT of people to tip over Puerto Rico

Strategic location. I’ve been to PR 4 times since the hurricane and have gotten to know some of the people pretty well. Puerto Rico is a pretty good test sample of what could happen to the US. Back in 86 the government tried to get their financial affairs in order but the people protested and the government gave in. Had breakfast with an economics professor last time I was there. Recently retired and I’m guessing he’s around 70. He said the worst thing to ever happen to PR was the welfare program. Too many people would rather live off the government than to work. Lots of corruption and too many people have gotten to where they can justify the corruption in their minds so they do it and don’t hold others accountable when they do it.
It’s also a good test for overpopulation. Even with the great growing seasons they can’t produce enough food for their own island. Add to that the fact that farmland is being turned into developments will only make things worse.

We do have over 11 million miles of economic zone territory waters, second only to France, because of our mainland coastline, Hawaii and Alaska, but also PR, and all the Pacific Territories (several groups of them). If we ever found rare earths off the shoreline (like Japan recently has) might be worth it to keep them.....sans PRico, they are just a drain and always will be.

In my opinion, there are two big factors at play for Puerto Rico’s struggles:
Welfare and dumb federal laws meant to make Puerto Rico a market for imports rather than self-reliant on domestic industry.

Without Rico we wouldn't have gotten those awesome and totally safe Puerto Rican pride parades in NYC.

I dont get it. We pay benefits anyway, we send disaster relief, we protect them from invasion. Why not just absorb them now?
That place would be Hawaii in 5 years...and be an economic positive soon enough.
Sure, the welfare system would take an immediate hit taking on the population
