Thanks EU for your concern now GFY.

quote:

European Commissioner Thierry Breton tweeted Wednesday night that he spoke with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings about lowering the service's streaming speeds. It's part of an effort to encourage people and companies to switch back to standard definition, instead of high definition (let alone ultra-crisp 4K), when it's not necessary in order to keep the pipelines flowing to all. The request raises the possibility of streaming content reverting to 20th century-level picture quality during the crisis in some areas.

ETA: "We did not have COVID-19 when you mailed actual DVDs to people. So, we demand you go back to that!"

Italy is ground zero in Europe for all this shite yet they are going to yell at Netflix about video quality.

The EU in a nutshell, folks.

The EU has a lot of weird regulations.

Two brought up during Brexit were “Grocers can’t sell bananas with a curve over X degrees” and “You can’t market water as a cure for dehydration.”

Remember during the Net "Neutrality" rollback... they told us how awesome the European's internet service was?

What am I missing?

This doesn't sound like a horrible thing to consider at a time when there could be an overwhelming amount of Internet traffic while people are sitting at home waiting this thing out.

irony being if EU didn't have some form of "net neutrality", they could legally throttle Netflix right now.

Ah, creating artificial scarcity of an artificial product.

Bandwidth rationing is the definition of an iatrogenic shortage.

I love all these "we get to strip your rights and also lower your quality of living, because well...fear" arguments. Covid19 is becoming a fascist silver bullet.
