This is complicated by many factors, not the least of which being Greenland has domain over it's natural resources wholly independent of Demark. Maybe the biggest hurdle involved are the people of Greenland themselves who — by and large —oppose the exploitation of it's natural resources, to the point of often voting for leaders who are staunchly anti-mining.

Ok - my quick google search says we don’t pay rent, per se, but we do pay to have our people there
how much does having us there contribute to their economy?

You can remove the "probably" because we are definitely paying for US bases in Europe.
That said, we're "probably" paying for their bases as well.
