Okay, this just seems like winning. We get out of protecting a bunch of people who haven’t protected themselves, and we get a mineral rich territory larger than Alaska.

Got a better idea. Lets remove all US troops from Europe and call it a day.

Trump needs to tell them in no uncertain terms that they’ll be on their own over there going forward and it’s been nice knowing you. Good luck.

what will you do with them convert them back to farm land or fill them with the airplanes you don't have, people without military's don't need military bases.

Russia and China would invade Europe within a month if they did that.

Russia has its hands full with Ukraine. Doubt they have the men\material to move into Europe. But Ukraine probably had a stronger military than any of the EU states.

For his part, Trump should realize that making everyone in a friendly nation hate him doesn’t help his cause. His loose talk of annexing Canada last year helped Justin Trudeau’s party survive a national election that it should have lost.

His Greenland saber-rattling is presumably making it harder for leaders in Denmark to work with him on sensible economic and security cooperation.

Good luck with that part.

Trump deals with nations the same way he deals with individuals. He either gets his ring kissed by them or, if not, he unleashes fury upon them.

There's no middle, it's all extremes.

And he delights in provoking confrontation when it's not necessary.

It's just a style of bullying, and it feeds his ego, as well as the cult members who live vicariously through him.

Now, all that said, I'm not 100% against doing things that make other countries fear the US, or asserting our dominance. I think it can absolutely be "America First" to do so. We've had too many administrations—for decades—so afraid to offend anybody that we've bent over and taken it up the bum way too many times. I'm so glad that Trump is not the isolationist pussy that Huckster Carlson convinced 95% of this board that we should have for the last six years.

The problem is the ham-fisted and blind way Trump goes about it. He often steps on his own dick. There's nothing efficient about creating problems that didn't have to exist just so you can claim you solved a problem. It's just a waste when you do that sort of thing. Of energy, of money, maybe eventually of lives, of goodwill, of everything.

I don't mind working harder to maintain American hegemony and dominance. But we need to work smarter too.

If they’re anything like CONUS bases (and I’m pretty positive they are), we contribute to thriving local economies at the very least.

Yep. Near my hometown, Ft. McClellan was closed in the late 90s or early 2000s and Anniston has gone in the toilet since. They even built this huge bypass road through a damn mountain to get from Interstate 20 to bypass Anniston on the way to Jacksonville and Gadsden.

Closing the fort absolutely killed the local economy there. It is only recently that local politicians have come up with any semblance of a plan and put a small industrial park and an annex of a community college out there on fort property to where it brings in some money. Katt Williams also bought a big piece of the old fort property there. He says he plans to turn it into some sort of production studio space kinda like Tyler Perry's in Atlanta.

how much does having us there contribute to their economy?

I really don’t know, but I’d be surprised if it was not substantial

It’s probably much like how having a home football game in Athens, Knoxville, or Gainesville boosts the economies of those cities.

Ukraine had a well equipped military with somewhere around a 250,000 active troops pre war. Now it close to 800,000.Countries in the Baltics like Estonia, Lithuania, have extremely low numbers ..like in the low tens of thousands. Russia in time could start trouble there but the NATO countries..minus US help should still be able to handle Russia in a conventional arms fight....but there is no guarantee it stays conventional or other parties dont get involved.

Here is a scenario for you. We back out of supporting NATO and it invites Russian aggression down the road. War breaks out in the Baltics. The US administration in power is much different than we have now and goes back to supporting Europe militarily and our boys are now back into a war in Europe. I dont like the fact that we spend as much as we do supporting NATO and we should continue to push for them to do more of the heavy lifting but I think removing ourselves from the alliance will be a move we will regret in the future.
