on Friday, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas responded to 2024 Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump’s comments about NATO by stating that while “all these statements from the United States are making us worried,” “we haven’t taken defense seriously enough.” And Trump’s comments have “been a wake-up call for many European countries that haven’t done enough. And I think that is a positive thing, if they start to do more.”

But Trump is a meanie head and says bad things!

The Baltics are far more patriotic in the classical American theme than a lot of Americans today, especially when it comes to actually governing.

No way we should spill our blood and treasure on protecting someone else if they aren’t willing to spill their own blood and treasure to defend themselves.

Estonia agrees.

The problem with that statement, is that Europe hasn’t actually stepped up. They’re not making major investments to increase their industrial capacity and support Ukraine.

Trump to Germany - Don't rely on Russian natural gas only, or you'll be on your knees begging for energy.

Trump to NATO - Honor your obligations or face the consequences.

I see nothing wrong with either position by Trump.

Well, Estonia, while small, has been meeting their commitments. Apparently, they don't like freeloading Western Europe any more than we do.

People don’t know how bad it is. A couple of years ago I read an article to the effect that Germany had fewer than 10 serviceable combat aircraft. The U.K. has gutted its armed forces. They probably couldn’t put 10,000 combat troops in the field.

In general, a lot of former Russian satellites don’t want to go through that shite again.

The main exceptions are the ones that had a significant Russian minority.

How could they? The reliance on Russian energy and its subsequent collapse has led to massive deindustrialization, particularly in Germany. The destruction of Nordstream was the burning of the proverbial boats and there’s likely no going back.

Despite the best intentions and desires of the uniformed members of our European Allies, the EU pols care less about what their constituents want than ours. Until that changes NATO has and will continue to “Need Americans To Operate”.
