Last year ESPN lost eight million cable and satellite subscribers, finishing 2021 with around 75 million total subscribers. That eight million subscriber loss, an average of nearly 22,000 people a day, represented 10% of ESPN’s overall subscriber base and accelerated a calamitous decline from over 100 million subscribers just over a decade ago.

The loss of those eight million subscribers will cost the network roughly a billion a year in recurring revenue across all ESPN network properties.

Clearly, they need to double down on politics with sports because that's what people want. Also, spend more time telling white people they are racist and dripping with white privilege while also telling us the millionaire athletes are just poor indentured slaves.

Just more bad news for Disney

That indicates a trend not just for ESPN but for cable/satellite services more generally. Since you can't buy cable service ala carte, you're forced to take whatever packages they offer. Dropping it all drops ESPN.

That said, I dropped cable way back in the spring of 2020, so they lost me long before that.

I personally enjoy the melodic tones of some unbathed big mouth black lesbian shrieking about wypipo!

Definitely true to a large degree. However, maybe when your business model is hemorrhaging users, pissing off half of them is not the smartest decision.

I have no particular love for ESPiN, but take this with a grain of salt.

This is not like cancelling Netflix or some other self-contained streaming service. Big chunk of this is probably people just cutting the cord and going with some mix of streaming platforms.

It's mind boggling to me that ESPN has not come up with a backup strategy on their primary content, and continue to hitch their wagons to legacy cable and satellite providers.

Oh, I'm not suggesting this was all cord cutters. I'm saying people have been getting fed up with ALL of it. From the nonstop woke nonsense, to the inability to choose networks, etc. In this case, if you want to drop ESPN, you basically have to drop basic cable, since you can't chose to drop only ESPN, or any network for that matter. My guess is that if cable companies allowed ala carte pricing you'd see an obvious drop in networks people hate or don't want to fund any longer.

For me, it was gradual. I dropped Cox Cable for cost and no longer wanting so many channels and tried YouTube TV for a bit, only to realize that I didn't even want/need that and dropped it all by midsummer 2020. By then, I was glad I had.

I dropped cable when the networks were crazy woke and my toleration was full. Froze U tube tv after Football season. When LSU decided to go woke over George Floyd I cancelled U tube TV since I am done with woke sports and am not waiting for nor need an apology.

Pretty sure I did not miss the event where they lit up the stadium in the high school colors of the LEO that died recently from being shot.

But there are people here that say Disney is doing better than ever because they had to wait in a 2 hour long line to ride the new Splash Mountain.

Long-term, Disney is in trouble. They've alienated families AND they're prohibitively expensive. Quality-wise, I don't think they are nearly as competitive in Florida as the other megapark they share Orlando with, as they were just a decade or so ago.

They have the high ground and the resources to change, but will likely not do so without a major shift in corporate culture.

How likely is that in the short or even mid-term?

Quit watching long ago due to the fact they do not properly represent the American demographic.

This has nothing to do with them being woke, it's cord cutting. Look at neilson ratings if you want to see how wokeness is impacting Disney. No telling how many of the 10% even watched ESPN. Forcing people to buy ESPN when they didn't even want the channel was great when the train was rolling, but now the cable/satellite gravy train is being de-railed and it hurts.

It's not all cord cutting because that number includes ESPN+ subscribers too.

You can cut the cord but all services you buy have ESPN with them. It’s something else

Hmmm? Maybe why ESPN is pointing out the NBA's Chinese influence.
An effort to separate themselves from the "get woke go broke".
Florida Disney was a good lesson.
