Pentagon chief Mark Esper said “most believe” that Tuesday’s deadly explosion in Lebanon was an accident.
Esper made the remarks at the Aspen Security Forum on Wednesday. In the hours after the Beirut blast, President Trump said at a news conference that the explosion may have been the result of a bomb going off in an "attack," but Lebanese officials have not said that was the case.
“Still getting information on what happened,” the secretary of defense said. “Most believe it was an accident, as reported. Beyond that, I have nothing further to report on that. It's obviously a tragedy.”

We could bomb the hell out of China, then President Trump come out and say " those were some big bomb explosions" The entire world would swear that it was just leftover New Years Fireworks.

I saw an eyewitness on tv that said he heard a plane fly over right before the explosion.

Or Trump was briefed on what happened, publicly acknowledged it was an attack and now Esper is trying to clean up information the IC and defense communities don't want out there.
Which I believe is a far more likely scenario than "some fireworks exploded".

Regardless of where someone stands on Middle East issues, to suggest this could have been an attack is completely rational. Less than half a century ago, Lebanon was in a multi-pronged Civil War. They've been in conflict with Israel sporadically since then and a significant part of the country is controlled by a Syrian-backed Shia militia. When I saw the video I immediately thought it was a bomb.

I believe it was most likely a accident. But one would be naive to believe that that explosion was nothing but fireworks.

If Trump would've come out and said it was an accident, then the left would've called it a bombing. Haven't we learned by now?
