U.S. investigators have recovered $2.3 million worth of cryptocurrency paid as a ransom to the cybercrime group responsible for the attack that shut down Colonial Pipeline last month, the Justice Department announced Monday.

During a press conference Monday, FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate confirmed that the U.S. had seized funds from a bitcoin wallet belonging to Darkside.

Investigators seized 63.7 Bitcoins out of the original payment of about 75 Bitcoin, per the Justice Department press release.

"Since last year, we've been pursuing an investigation into DarkSide, a Russia-based cybercrime group," he added.

What they're saying: "Ransomware attacks are always unacceptable, but when they target critical infrastructure, we will spare no effort in our response," said Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco.

"Today, we turned the tables on DarkSide," she added.

"[T]he Department of Justice has found and recaptured the majority of the ransom Colonial paid to the Dark Side Network in the wake of last month’s ransomware attack," said Monaco.

You'd think they would've cleaned out their account immediately after receiving the funds. Why wait?

I don’t believe them. They’re likely trying to save face by returning Colonial their payoff while faking a seizure in an attempt to look competent.

Colonial needs to be held accountable for paying the ransom. Giving into the demands of criminals and terrorists is weakness and invites more of the same to happen.

Bitcoin transactions aren’t reversible without the end user choosing to send the Bitcoin back, so something is not adding up here

Is this really a smart move ? If they really took most of the money back then they better step up the cyber security. The hackers are liable to go after something more important next time and make sure it stays dawn as long as possible.

Right? What an amazingly slanted headline. This isn't a victory.

The people who would hold them accountable are the ones who demanded they pay the extortionists.

First Musk, then Trump, and now DOJ taking a dump on Bitcoin.

Whatever will the criminals and the smartest investors in the marketplace do?

Go for the Doge?
