everyone is easily manipulated and brainwashed. Including each, and every one of us.

We have all been manipulated and will continue to be manipulated

Accepting this truth, is the first step in lowering the amount that we are manipulated

Think about all the things that are not on the news, and ask why. Then, think about the things that are.

There is a very specific reason for that.

Therein lies the problem. Conservatives seek out conservative leaning news outlets and liberals seek our liberal leaning news outlets. Whichever side you're on, the propoganda and echo chambers are present.

I'm conservative and no matter how much i think my views and thoughts are right, there is someone on the other side that is just as brainwashed the other direction and truly believes I'm an idiot and they know the truth..

It's called 'Critical Thinking'. Very few people are good at these days.

I’ve felt this way for a long time. The internet and social media dumping information on us constantly has actually made it much more difficult to attempt to discern truth.

Fair enough. I've had takes people would disagree with. I’m not claiming I’ve got this all figured out and some things I learned, I learned the hard way.

I was more just talking about how people sort through information now - what’s your take on that part?

You have to be hyper-aware of human nature and know that you are not immune from it. 2 of the main culprits are confirmation bias and tribalism. You have to be willing to do a self-audit every once in a while. I’ve always been very mindful of that but nobody can escape it. Awareness of this is a great first step. Most people don’t even get that far.

We have been at war with Iran for a long time. People are just noticing now because bombs are dropping. Muslims hate America and everything we stand for.

This concept that you’ve been talking about since page one is known as confirmation bias to most of us. Yes, it’s very difficult to overcome because it’s human nature to choose what we already believe and reject what we don’t.

Yeah, confirmation bias is definitely a big part of it - it’s hard to get around. What’s interesting to me, though, is it seems like a lot of people in this thread feel less confident about what’s true now than they used to. Our basic psychology hasn’t really changed, so it makes me wonder what changed around us and your previous post about the internet and social media is a good start (I think it's a probably a lot of other things as well). Even if it's just that though, how social media and the internet lead people to feel that way bears discussion because plenty of folks don't get how that works and then if we get to that, then how do we fix it.
