Can you even imagine if parents no longer spared the rod but used it to raise the child? Even the Holy Bible supports it. I promise you, if one of my children "gets out of line" the buttocks are feeling the strap.

Why did Spock create the monster?

Whatever Happened to the Discipline?

Spock was a Moron!!

I would have got whooped worse than that by my old man. Good call kid.
His mom likely would have whooped more than his arse. Fear of punishment is a good thing. It motivates.

He got it easy, he had pants on...

My dad use to crack me on the back of my legs when I had shorts on, and don't try to block it...

I will not ever forget the time I got into a fight at school. I was in 3rd grade. My beatdown and I were taken to the principal's office. My beatdown went in first and a few minutes later, I heard the principle paddlin' that butt and I took off and ran home.

When my father got home, he spanked dat a$$ then he took me back to school and the principal spanked it again.

What a day that was!!

Train children early

This is the way. I whipped my kids when they were younger (<12). I can probably count the times I spanked my daughter on one hand, but the boys are a different story. I don’t have to anymore- there are now better options for discipline. There are things that are now more important to them than not having a spanked arse. I control their access to those things.

This was always the goal. I never enjoyed spanking my children, but I knew it was necessary. My kids are far from perfect, but I routinely get compliments on how respectful they are.

Plan your work and work your plan.

I try to remember there’s a difference between discipline and punishment. Discipline is for disciples. Punishment is for criminals. They each serve different purposes. Discipline is more effective with appropriate punishment, punishment without discipline is counterproductive, but a life without either is a detriment to society.

Shame and embarrassment need to make a comeback in our society.

I’ve never once had to spank my children. Not that I’m against it necessarily, just saying I’ve never had to.

At some point if behavior doesn’t change and you’re constantly having to whip your children, perhaps your methods of parenting are sub par.

Quoted for truth.

Tho, admittedly... After a while, getting older... It made me get smarter about not getting caught too.

Yet Spock convinced America to forget what had worked throughout history and "trust yourself...... you know more than you think you do."

As you mentioned, it was hard for you to "spank" your child which is why we are instructed to understand how important it is we do not "spare the rod".

I only spanked both of my kids once each.

After that, a look or verbal reminder was all it took.

In the long run, that one spanking was even appreciated by my kids. It saved them hundreds of “timeouts”.

That is awesome you did not ever have to spank your child. I know it only took two "spankings" for me to understand I would not do what caused the "spanking" again.

Your children learned real early obviously. How hard did the ob-gyn Dr "spank" their behind after they exited the womb?

I agree. But, in order for that to be effective, there must be a standard to which we are all held. We used to have that. It’s called “Christianity.”

A quick anecdotal example:

I grew up (mostly) without my father. When my parents split, my mother had no other option than to apply for welfare and food stamps (while working two jobs- forcing her to quit court reporter school). I vividly remember the shame and embarrassment every time she bought groceries, or while we were standing in line for literal government cheese. We lived in section 8 apartments in the hood. I used to get in fights in elementary school (broadmoor) because the blacks thought I was lying when I said “I dont have any lunch money. I’m just as poor as you are.”

Those events motivated me. But, it was the influence of Christ (in my teens) that guided me to the right when I hit that fork in the road. I’m definitely oversimplifying, but, in short- it’s a lot harder to do the wrong things (which garner shame and embarrassment) when you make it a habit of doing everything you do “as unto the Lord.”

The secret to true success (in all things, but certainly in avoiding shame and embarrassment) is to
HAVE AN ETERNAL MINDSET.

I don't really have a problem with the beating except for one thing.

14 is way too old to be getting a whipping. I know the kid was crying and all by the end of it, but that whipping likely did him no good at all in terms of shaping his overall behavior.

The time period for that to have been effective was when he was much younger.

It's like the elephant and the stake. When an elephant is a baby and is staked to the ground, he can't pull the stake out. So he learns to move according to that limit. By the time he could easily pull the stake out, he doesn't even try because in his mind, he still can't.

That kid is at an age at which he is on the cusp of realizing that the type of beating an adult can give him will either be not so bad as to be feared, or it will cross the line into something that can get the adult in trouble. Either way, it's too late for whippings to be effective if they're just starting now.

That horse has left the barn.

By the time we got to be in our teens we were not afraid of spankings. Even by the PE coach with the fraternity/boat oar paddle. We were afraid of disappointing our parents, however.
