In the long run, that one spanking was even appreciated by my kids. It saved them hundreds of “timeouts”.

My brother and I never got spanked and never got timeouts or any punishment. When we reached our 30s I asked Bro: 'Did we ever do anything wrong?' Him: 'No, and I'm not sure why.' Me: 'I would never have done anything to disappoint Dad. I'd rather get a beating.' He agreed. We had a great Dad who led by example every day.

Yet Spock convinced America to forget what had worked throughout history and "trust yourself...... you know more than you think you do."

First thought:

Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight

Followed immediately by:

Proverbs 14:12
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.

From DDG:

Benjamin Spock's Beliefs Humanism and Secular Views Benjamin Spock's philosophical approach was primarily rooted in humanism. This perspective emphasizes human reason and ethics, often placing less importance on religious beliefs. While there is no definitive evidence that Spock identified as an atheist, his teachings did not incorporate biblical perspectives, indicating a more secular viewpoint.

How’s that working out for society?

Joshua 24:15
15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.

Two of my best friends were brothers. The one who didn’t receive whipping as punishment grew up to be a respected expert in psychological testing. The one who was spanked or whipped regularly for misbehaving was a constant screwup when he grew up and died passed out from drugs in a house fire.

Who knows?

Spock didn't create a "Monster".

He admitted, later in life that he knew nothing about rearing children. He did it like most "Authors". He did it to make money.

My oldest sister read his book and raised a litter of do nothings.

Spock's book did more to undermine discipline in American society than any other. Of course, letting women vote plays a huge part as well.

Sorry to hear that about your friend. Are you blaming the spankings? Do you think your friend’s behavior would have improved without them?

Well, isn't the variable in that equation obvious?

Assuming that the parents treated their children equitably, the first brother didn't get whippings because he wasn't inclined to misbehave and the other was unusually inclined to misbehave. The whippings—or lack thereof—followed the inherent inclinations, which obviously persisted into adulthood.

Parenting only goes so far. Nature matters as well as nurture. About all I can glean from that anecdote is that the whippings weren't enough to overcome the second child's inherent inclinations.

That does bring up a point that needs to be addressed in this discussion, however. Kids are different and different punishments are effective (or not) on each kid.

Some kids don't fear spankings at all. For some kids having to spend a couple of hours in their rooms without being able to talk to anyone or come out or go outside is a far more effective punishment than spanking. It's not some magic formula that works in all cases.

There is a time and place for everything and not everything requires the same resolution. The problem is that many people want the same resolution for everything.

Physical action is distasteful, but many can't handle even just seeing it so they attempt to not only raise their children by trying to reason with them as if they are little adults, but then they try to force that view onto others and label it as being enlightened, or modern, etc.

The issue is that all kids aren't the same and that all actions worthy of punishment aren't worthy of the same punishment. For some kids, just talking to them sternly is enough to stop whatever unwanted behavior, but for others it requires taking something from them (a favored toy, for example) while yet others it requires whipping that arse.

What you see with a lot of these kids isn't just a lack of parental discipline of that child, but the lack of parental discipline of their peers (ie: social influences). To reverse this it takes a concerted effort from the majority of the community seeing those behaviors as offensive and being willing to not only punish but to allow punishment (like from the video).

I applaud the guy for giving the kid the choice between the guy whipping his arse versus making him tell his mother what he did AND filming it all AND putting it online. The cumulative impact of those multiple steps is more likely to make that young man re-think doing that in the future.

That kid is probably wishing he had a father like the fella that just spanked his behind.

Can you even imagine if all young kids were taught something as basic as fishing? Of course we can expand on other areas of teaching to help them manage their time and stay out of trouble caused by stinking thinking.

And don't forget that he also promised the kid that he would be checking on him and offered to spend time with him as well.

That's the thing about punishment. Into our teen years it was not really the actual punishment that kept us from deviating too much from the straight and narrow. It was the emotional punishment of disappointing our parents, whom we knew loved us and cared for us.

That guy was trying to cover all the bases with the kid. Introducing a father figure to him who cared whether he lived or died AND who would be disappointed in him if he acted a fool IMO made more of a difference in this situation than the whipping. Again, not that I object to it.

The writer Spock needed help with his "teaching" so Hollywood created the actor Spock to lend credibility to the writings of Spock the writer.

That is how ignorant almost all Americans are. I mean CIA Director Allen Dulles was forced to resign by JFK yet Dulles was named to the Warren Commission to investigate the assassination. Fast forward to 2008 after a war with a man named Hussein, Americans elect a man whose middle name is Hussein.

Yeah, it was very important to some people that the masses followed the teachings of this quack. There's a reason his book is no longer popular and no one talks about him anymore.

Boys require discipline from older men or they go feral. They have to have fear of consequences. They have to have good examples. Single mothers are not equipped for this. They can try, but ultimately, if that boy doesn't have a father figure who's there and paying attention and instilling discipline, then she's handicapping that kid emotionally and he will end up doing the hypermasculinity thing because he never saw an actually masculine man operate.

If I collected a nickel for every time I have mentioned to others or simply said, "Spare the rod, spoil the child," I would have so many nickels.
