re: Disney shutting down “Splash Mountain” ride because it’s racist

The new ride features a “boat jacking” and a statue of Latoya to give it that realistic New Orleans feel.

Song of the South wasn't racist.

Other than the mountain being rethemed to a bayou, I have no issue with the switch to Princess and the Frog. Rides get rethemed all of the time at other parks to more current themes. Having said that, Disney could have just left it at that and not even played up the "racism" angle.
Agree completely but this isn’t an official Disney pronouncement. It’s just another website that offers insights to all things Disney, although it wouldn’t surprise me if Disney had written the article.
This is the author’s bio (no pics - you don’t want!). I’m surprised it uses “she” as opposed to pronouns.

isn't it amazing that these woke Disney employees and management have no idea they are running full steam into eliminating the source of their jobs?

When I was a kid I wanted to go to Disneyland so badly, thankful I didn't.

I get it may have been considered a little bit 'politically incorrect', but how can it be racist without any white males?

There should be a boat taking on water with Sean Penn trying to bail it out with a Big Gulp for the sake of authenticity.

i wonder how many millions of black adults and children have ridden Splash Mountain since it came out that haven't complained at all and enjoyed it thoroughly. That said, they stopped doing effective maintenance on this ride (and many others) a long time ago. I'm not sure that I have ridden Splash Mountain in any of the 2000s in which all of the additional theming/animatronics have worked.
As a person who hates the woke mob and hates corporations bowing down to the minority woke mob, I'm actually looking forward to the ride having elements that actually work, at least for a few years before they stop fixing stuff properly.

Unless I'm missing something on my way to the CBD this retheming was more about virtue signaling than it was a refreshening..
So you currently ride in a log cart in a mountain. Wonder if they gonna make the log into a pirouge, and at the end of the ride you go down a Bourbon st replica where you have to dodge bullets and prevent getting your pirouge jacked. If you gonna go woke, make it as realistic as possible. Terrible idea by Disney.

My kids are 14 and 10 and have never been to Disney and we plan to keep it that way.

Replace one black charicature movie theme with another black charicature movie theme. Makes perfect sense.

Why?

I mean, of all the things to bitch about with Disney, this is one of the least. It’s a ride themed with a movie that hasn’t been commercially available in over two generations. Kids right now, and more than likely their parents, have never seen or heard of Song of the South.
Ok, then sell like that. Tell the public you’re updating the ride to a more current theme. Don’t through the pseudo intellectual mental gymnastics of “racism” to justify it.
I mean if they really cared about racism, they’d shut down it’s a small world…

This, honestly. We all have a bone to pick with woke Disney, but this ride/property simply were no longer viable. I'm 34. Know about Song of the South, but never watched it start to finish. Same for my wife. Our kids don't even know what it is.
They DO know Tiana. This is a no-brainer move for DisneyWorld. Frontierland already has a tough time competing with more ballyhooed areas of the park
Splash Mountain opened in 1989 after the 1986 theatrical re-release of Song of the South. The issue with Song of the South isn't some wokism ideal... In 1046, when the movie was first released, there were massive protests.
Becuase of all the issues around it... Disney was never able to capitalize on the IP around the movie and the ride. Gift shop items were bland. That's not how Disney does things.
This retheme will:
1) Drive interest to a part of the MK that hasn't seen a lot of improvements / changes over the years. This is important to balance the croweds with Tron opening this year.
2) Allow for a Tiana specific gift shop and sale of IP which will bring in further revenue
3) Allow the company to put Song of the South firmly behidn them. I wish they would not... but the cufrent dichotmy of having a ride while leaving the movie locked in the vault, was never a great idea.

quote:Both bad? Debatable, and I'm inclined to agree. Not equally bad. We all fund groomers indirectly, just some ways are less trendy to hate on.
I’m saying grooming kids and paying someone to groom kids are both bad.
And for the record, I'm a big fan of what Disney used to be, and those that have corrupted it could all burn in Hell, the sooner the better, but we "begrudgingly" watch ESPN here, right? I don't, but I'm sure I'm a minority. Have AT&T? T-Mobile? Verizon? Hell... pay taxes?

So fricking stupid. Br’er Rabbit was symbolic for how oppressed people could manipulate and trick those in power to get the upper hand. I loved Uncle Remus when I was a child. It wasn’t racist in any way. Woke idiots ruin everything that is good.
Disney World is massively overrated. Save your money.
