Did you know the GOP used to be "Blue" and Dems "Red"?

And when election results flowed in Tuesday night, Nov. 2, Studio 8-H at 30 Rockefeller Center lit up. Light bulbs on each state changed from undecided white to Republican blue and Democratic red.

That’s right: In the beginning, blue was red and red was blue and they changed back and forth from election to election and network to network in what appears, in hindsight, to be a flight of whimsy. The notion that there were “red states” and “blue states”—and that the former were Republican and the latter Democratic—wasn’t cemented on the national psyche until the year 2000.

If the parties had their choice from the beginning, what color would they have deemed most desirable? Does it matter?

Uh yeah.

It changed every election.

But because of Bush v Gore it became too tied in to each party.

Red is the color of Communism. It hit too close to home for Dems, so they changed it to hide their true nature.

It used to swap around. And different TV stations used different colors.

I am annoyed they went away from that. Makes politics more like a sporting contest with team colors. It was already like that but this worsened things unnecessarily.

Yes.

I have the belief that the dems paid some focus group a lot of money to research this and they concluded that it unfairly colored them as RED commie lefties so they petitioned the progfilth media to change this overnight.

Not based on any knowledge but I remembered the 80s that republicans were blue.

Now red is my favorite map color.

I might be wrong but I don't think the Democrats liked being associated with Red China and USSR communism. Which is pretty ironic given todays dem candidates.

I have a lib friend who was once convinced that Reagan was a Democrat and his boom moment was that picture.

To this day he posts nothing but leftist political memes and argues his point as if he's a political savant. Makes me laugh every time.

Each network chose its own colors for the map. Some, did not even use red and blue.

I am convinced that the current scheme “won out” because the networks did not want to be seen as taking sides by applying “red” (a traditional Soviet color) to the party on the Left

Imagine looking at that map in 1980 still on a black and white set.

You must be very young.

West Virginia is full of unionized miners. They have been a Dem stronghold for almost 100 years.

Hardcore Dem labor vote. WV didn’t flip until 1984 and wasn’t a safe Republican seat until the 2000s.

As I recall, one of the networks used Yellow one year, too.
