Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is telling unemployed residents in his state that they need to be looking for a job if they want to continue receiving benefits.

The Republican governor is reinstituting a policy, suspended during the coronavirus pandemic due to high unemployment, stating that Floridians must prove they are looking for work to receive unemployment benefits from the state, according to CBS Miami.

DeSantis added that May will be the last month Floridians can collect benefits from the state without looking for work.

“We absolutely can put more people to work,” he said. “The demand is there. Business want to hire more people, and I think we can go in that direction very soon.”

I don’t know how you verify this. What’s to stop someone from intentionally bombing interviews to remain unemployed?

They at least make you go to the interview.

That was all waived.

Now you have to work to stay unemployed.

There are ways to do it. Of course, cheaters will cheat. But the state can do spot checks on selected unemployment recipients using the contact information they have to provide. They can call the prospective employer and verify contact and outcome. Can't do it for all, but if word gets around that it is being verified, perhaps some will think twice before cheating. Perhaps!

I hope Florida has the equivalent of an iron dome protecting this guy. While Righties sit behind their keyboards expecting the first significant shot fired in the political/economic war we're engaged in to be from a fellow "patriot," it'll be the Left that draws first royal blood. Outside of Trump, nobody is as royal on the Right as DeSantis.

Effort.

Going out and intentionally bombing interviews is a scheme that a person who would benefit from that doesn’t have the will to pull off.

I was in St Augustine last week and every, and I mean every single business from restaurants to car dealerships to apartment buildings to surf shop to bait store to grocery store to gas station, every single one had help wanted signs out, and even posting very high (in my opinion) starting wages.

I see similar in GA where I live but in St Augustine it was just obnoxious.

Good call by DeSantis.

Kemp needs to do the same in GA.

There are definitely ways around the system. I think in LA all you have to do is provide the names of the company's you applied to. Don't even need to answer a call back or show-up for an interview

I was stuck paying unemployment for a former employee that I could prove was working down the street. And, the State just told me that he's reporting he doesn't have a job; so benefits will continue

Just think how much better FL will be when Crist is governor...we can’t keep having all these things killing Floridians amid a murderous pandemic

I live in Florida and own a small business. Took me four fricking months to find a pest control tech.

I wish there was a list of people who were on unemployment for the last year and that list was passed around to employers so that we could know who not to hire, or at least have them at the bottom of the totem pole when deciding on an employee.
