Thats an issue.. if they are ....they could lose access for reporting on something that makes certain folks at the Pentagon unhappy.

This is nothing new. The mitigating factor is having to explain why someone was kicked out for their reporting. Anything short of obvious justification would get plenty of unwanted attention.

I think they are complaining because it makes it harder to do their job.
A job often requiring manipulation of facts to fit a narrative.
War fighting is not a fertile field for truth. Never has been so I see no downside to this.

That could be a part of it but its just a general tightening of the information flow that I dont see as warranted. Or at least I havent heard a satisfactory answer as to why it is warranted. Have you?

This would seem to limit the need for explanation ..no?

It's to stop the absolute flood of leaking information that is not for global publication. Assuming you agree the pentagon has a legit reason not to announce our strategies to enemies, in part for political reasons, then I assume we can both agree that's a justification for making journos promise not to actively try and obtain unauthorized info.

Eta
It's also not a new concept that personnel aren't by default authorized to speak to the media. It's why press secretaries exist. No entity public or private lets theor grunts speak on behalf of the company, department, unit, etc.

The Pentagon is not going to come out and say “we have leakers, we may have traitors and we may have inside people not dedicated to truth and security let alone the questionable tactics and questionable patriotism of the press “.

So this

You don't see how unfettered access for activist journalists in one of the most secure buildings in the world is an issue?

Frankly I'm surprised it's taken this long to lock the place down given all the leaks that spring out of there.

Why should information be able to flow at all from the pentagon without approval by the pentagon?

Again, if information gets out and the press reports on it, that happens anyway. This is just making sure that unauthorized information is not being solicited by persons with the privilege of being physically present within the pentagon.

If journalists want to break stories with unauthorized information, they’ll need to get their information like anyone else. If they want access to the pentagon, they give up the ability to use unauthorized info. Why should they get to have their cake and eat it too?

Or better yet, why should any journalist be invited into the pentagon at all?

Even for simply asking questions that they may be unauthorized to hear answers to...... The policy suggests that asking agency personnel to disclose unauthorized information is not a protected activity under the First Amendment, potentially exposing reporters to prosecution for simply doing their jobs.

As a method of at least trying to hold the government accountable? It sounds like we have a fundamental difference in the role the press should have in keeping government in check.
