This column appeared in WSJ last week (paywall). Tom Suozzi is a New York Congressman.

quote:

I love America. Unfortunately, as we celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday, too many Americans associate those three words only with Republicans. Democrats need to change that.

Many in my party are unhappy with the nation’s current trajectory. Under President Trump, we’ve fallen short on income inequality. We’ve seen masked agents go head-to-head with U.S. citizens. Our elections and voting rights have been attacked, while misinformation proliferates online amid bigotry, extremism and political violence.

Despite all this, we should remain fiercely proud of the American system. It has enabled the quest for “a more perfect union,” making possible the abolition of slavery, the rights of women and black Americans to vote, the protection of civil rights, the confrontation of religious, ethnic and racial bigotry and so much more.

Patriotism doesn’t ask us to whitewash the country’s shortcomings. It requires us to confront them honestly while recognizing that our Constitution, our democratic institutions and generations of courageous citizens have given us the ability to correct our mistakes.

Democrats have long believed that America is great not because it is perfect, but because it has the capacity to become better. We must reclaim the language of patriotism, because our history teaches us the most American thing any of us can do is help our great nation live up to the ideals charted by our Founders 250 years ago: liberty, equality, democracy and the rule of law.

Our authoritarian adversaries suppress dissent and erase uncomfortable truths. America has repeatedly expanded liberty, broadened opportunity, and moved closer to fulfilling the promise that all people are created equal.

That’s why generations of Democrats have stood proudly at the helm of some of the most consequential struggles to shape American life. Democrats supported the rise of organized labor. Democrats gave us the 40-hour workweek and worker protections. Democrats created Social Security and Medicare. Democrats championed civil rights. Democrats pushed for major environmental protections. And it is Democrats who must now lead us patriotically into the future.

We must rebuild the American middle class. But we can’t do this by abandoning capitalism. Only by improving capitalism can we reward hard work and expand opportunity for every American who seeks it.

Capitalism has helped make America the most innovative and prosperous nation in the world. It has lifted living standards, created opportunity and helped build the strongest middle class in history. It has powered breakthroughs from the lightbulb to the microchip and fueled the ingenuity that defines our nation.

But capitalism works only when it is shaped by fair rules, open competition and a basic sense of responsibility. The answer to inequality isn’t to tear capitalism down, but to make it work better for the men and women who go to work every day and want to live the American Dream of homeownership, educated children, affordable health insurance and a safe retirement.

Patriotism means recognizing that America has been a force for good. The American Revolution wasn’t only a victory for the 13 colonies. It fueled struggles for independence, democracy and self-determination from Europe to Latin America. Across centuries, America’s example and leadership have also shaped Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, Australia, Canada, and many other places.

Two and a half centuries later, America is still a beacon. We should take pride in the generations of Americans who fought tyranny, defeated Nazism and fascism, defended democracy, welcomed millions and answered the call to help nations facing war, disaster and oppression. Our country has made mistakes abroad, but few nations have done more to advance human freedom and democratic values.

None of this means Democrats must agree with every policy or action of every administration. Patriotism doesn’t demand blind loyalty. It demands faith that our country is worth improving and confidence that our ideals are worth defending.

That same spirit should guide our agenda at home. Making America more affordable for working families, lowering the cost of healthcare and child care, protecting our seniors and strengthening public schools are all part of the same American project.

So are investing in infrastructure, science and clean energy; supporting workers and small businesses; securing our borders while honoring our immigrant heritage; defending voting rights and equal justice; and upholding individual liberty and the rule of law.

Together, these goals reflect a simple patriotic belief: America works best when communities are safe, opportunity is broad and every citizen has a voice in the nation’s future.

We should reject both the politics of resentment on the right and ideological purity on the left. Americans are looking for practical solutions, not endless culture wars or litmus tests.

The choice Democrats face is clear. We can allow patriotism to become a partisan label, or we can reclaim a tradition that rightly belongs to every American.

I agree. Even the few who appear to have a grip on sanity, like the author of the article in WSJ are complicit in what that Party has become.

And that is why he is standing up.

Problem is, few will join him aside from Fetterman and a handful of others.

He’s a Democrat.

Half his “party” aren’t.

He’s part of a coalition party shared between establishment leftists like Chuck Schumer and socialist/communist/anarchists like AOC and Mamdani.

There will be a reckoning between the socialist left and the populist/conservative right and the problem is regardless of what he says when that day comes he will be cheering on the socialists.

So regardless of whether he salutes the flag, if you back the socialists over the people who want to keep them at bay you’ve made your choice and picked your team.

Radio silence during Biden's tenure. What is income inequality? If you work hard, you earn more money. Stop the freebies. Masked agents are masked because of crazy people doxing them and they are going after illegals. Elections have always been rigged in favor of Democrats. The extremism and political violence is perpetrated by the left.

That's no longer the case. The Progressives want to tear it all down and erase our history. Look at how far this country has come since the 1960's on race relations. This is not JFK's Democratic Party.

He is "standing up" because he feels that is what he needs to do for self-preservation.

The real problem is that without the votes from the crazy left, without the corrupt welfare system that buys allegiance to the Dem candidates, without those votes the Dems would lose many more races and the Republicans would have complete control. It's about them maintaining power, nothing more. And Republicans are doing nothing about it because when it all falls apart, they don't want to be the one's left in power to be holding the bag when the hordes of citizens ransack DC and hang the politicians, if we're extrapolating out to the natural conclusion of the American 'experiment'.

Then why did the Biden Administration tear down statues and rename schools, streets, and military bases?

quote:

Our authoritarian adversaries suppress dissent and erase uncomfortable truths. America has repeatedly expanded liberty, broadened opportunity, and moved closer to fulfilling the promise that all people are created equal.

Why did the Biden Administration pressure social media companies to censor language that they didn’t agree with? Language that wasn’t part of the “official narrative?”

quote:

But capitalism works only when it is shaped by fair rules, open competition and a basic sense of responsibility. The answer to inequality isn’t to tear capitalism down, but to make it work better for the men and women who go to work every day and want to live the American Dream of homeownership, educated children, affordable health insurance and a safe retirement.

Then, why did the Biden Administration constantly push agendas and reward contracts on people based on their skin color or sexual orientation rather than by merit?

quote:

That same spirit should guide our agenda at home. Making America more affordable for working families, lowering the cost of healthcare and child care, protecting our seniors and strengthening public schools are all part of the same American project.

Is that why the Biden Administration had a cumulative total of 17% inflation? Is that why they shipped in millions of illegals and paid them better than our elderly and homeless?

quote:

So are investing in infrastructure, science and clean energy; supporting workers and small businesses; securing our borders while honoring our immigrant heritage; defending voting rights and equal justice; and upholding individual liberty and the rule of law.

Defending voting rights for CITIZENS (FIFY)

What a bunch of pretty words that mean absolutely nothing. Lots of lies and virtue signaling.

There has always been “income inequality” and acting like it’s now “a thing” under Trump is disingenuous.

Because the idiot citizens were not just “peacefully protesting” but were aggressively interfering with federal law officers trying to enforce our nation’s laws.

Please. Election chicanery has been obvious to any reasonable observer and “misinformation “ clearly is not a tactic unfamiliar to the Left.

Agreed, and we also have fought communism, which even in your attempt to bring back a sense and direction of moderation to your party, you are notably still fearful of calling out
by its name.

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and applaud his effort.

He has some serious shortcomings in his analysis but I think he is having to do that to gain any traction at all with the current apocalyptical trajectory of the democrat party.

They are seriously becoming what our nation has battled from its existence - a party completely obsessed with absolute control of the civilization.

IF this current version of democrats get in power - the only savior our nation has to survive under its current assumptions of liberty and freedom will be another armed conflict between the factions.

It would only take one tenure of this surging communist enclave to completely destroy the entire foundation of our nation. We cannot allow this to happen.

There is no reason to be had with the current socialists driving the Democrat party off the cliff.

I fear I will not live to see how this conflict ends. I pray that some level of common sense might invade the minds and consciousness of enough 'lifetime democrats' for them to kick the commies's asses out of the party and send them back to Cuba or Hati or Somalia or otther shithole whose 'progressiveness' they are trying to implant in America.

In fact, if they control congress in this next session - our goose is cooked.

I am so disgusted with the RINO contingent of the GOP that it makes me ill. Whatever they are considering in opposition to at least demanding FAIR ELECTIONS is beyond my ken. I cannot believe anyone other than a full blown communist, or a totally dependent imbecile, can support the maize of electoral fraud that has buoyed the Democrat party for the past 2 decades, but become their only avenue for success in the past five years.

They cannot win without overwhelming election fraud - and they could not achieve that without the avid support of the main stream media giants. How they have come to this conclusion is way beyond my understanding.

Still wouldn't trust him. As long as you knowingly align yourself self with the party of perverts, you are not a good person.

Forgot this one- it’s because you Dem buddies won’t hold the crowds accountable when they stop being peaceful. They stop being peaceful because you condone and encourage them. Your refusal to hold them accountable only emboldens them to push the envelope of violence further.

If you're a Democrat the only rational way to stand up for America and against the the DSA is to rebuke the current Democratic Socialist Party Congressman Souzzi. You do that by leaving the party.

His kind are the ones that stood by and let it happen and now are complaining that the terrible liberals are losing the party to the terrible communist.

If you hadnt run the sensible democrats out of the party like your doing to fetterman now you wouldnt be in this situation.

Dont cry about it now bleeding heart.

You support the deviants and trans and illegals but not the communist.

That sounds like a Democrat.
