The rollercoaster debt-ceiling talks are back at a stalemate amid a full-throated effort by the most conservative members of Kevin McCarthy’s caucus to preemptively kill any bipartisan deal.
Influential Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) told a right-wing host Tuesday night that “my position is to hold the damn line” and force a GOP-only plan into law, one of the many similar comments from Republicans in recent hours.
quote:
“I don’t even care about the negotiations going on at the White House,” he added.
The GOP's internal dynamics are having a direct effect on the talks. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy abruptly shifted his tone Tuesday just hours after optimistic comments in the Oval Office.
Late Tuesday night, a lead member of McCarthy’s negotiating team told reporters that talks were now off unless they see “fundamental change” from the White House.

The conservative rebellion is a mirror of sorts to what President Biden is confronting on his left flank, with many Democratic lawmakers similarly skeptical of concessions.
The unrest on both fringes is raising new questions not just if a deal can be struck — but whether it could then even pass Congress in time to avoid a potential default on June 1.

They are of course trying to blame the Republicans.

Oh well. The WH should have started talks in February when McCarthy asked for talks. This is on Potatoe

Us knowing this won't make the media report it that way.

How can they stall when the Dems never came to the table?
This is like me saying that my plans to frick Christina Hendricks have hit a snag.

This
They've already got a deal worked out but Republicans want to look like they held out until the last second
If I were the Democrats I'd drop the charade and openly state that they see no point in talking with Republicans since they'll fold anyway

I know the Republicans will cave but I am really holding out hope that they are willing to let it all burn to the ground...

Media will be all in for Biden, but 70% of Americans think the economy is shite and they will ultimately blame him if there is default and shite spirals out of control.
If that happens, 100% chance Biden isn’t the candidate. The Dems will replace him on the ticket to distance themselves.

They would do this even if Republicans gave them everything they wanted

Would probably be better in the long run than whatever "compromise" (code word for Republicans folded) they've got worked out

talks will stop this week so they can go home for Memorial Day and then "ramp" up Tuesday. Will probably go past June 1st and have a deal that scerws tax payers by June 10th.
Dems need to shut down the government for media stories of parks closed, building closed, and granny might not get social security checks fear mongering.
Let it go a few days past June 1st and Biden will be allowed to use 14th Amendment by all the media.

This is the sort of moronic ideology that will cripple this country, and the rest of the world. Actively hoping for a global catastrophe.
Is this the MAGA mantra? Hope and pray that millions lose their jobs and investments?

...and markets are dropping like a lead weight. Good Job Kevin--you know how to bollox an economy, like a pro.

Reports like this are bullshite. You simply don’t negotiate against yourself.
Demorats have not put forth their plan. Nothing.
Walk away. Hold the line.

I truly don’t get it. A default will devastate the 401ks of millions and cost millions of jobs. We are already seeing the stock market drop in response to the debt ceiling stall. Draw a line in the sand when it’s time to pass a budget.

What we have here, ... is a failure to negotiate.
McCarthy is being held hostage by a Far Right faction in the House. As a result, any reasonable concessions he may be willing to make with the President will trigger a no-confidence vote for his leadership as SOH.
America is being held hostage...by a rogue, recalcitrant House.
