It was directly on point and directly to the person he's arguing with (you).
You were making a point (implying) that this isn't exoneration. He made the point that you failed to point that out when Comey made a very similar argument.
If you were smart, instead of arguing, you should have agreed with his point and pointed out that this was every bit as dumb as Comey claiming he was exonerated.
It would have continued your point. It would have put him on your side of the argument. And, it would have removed his accusation that you are a hypocrite since you would have agreed that Comey's claim was bogus.
Instead, you just solidified his point that you are a hypocrite. It is what it is.
