Same thing with property tax. The government has set up a scenario where the citizen doesn’t ever actually own their home, they are only leasing it from the government

Yep, income and property taxes are immoral theft. Any tax that is jus baseline without action for the payer should be unconstitutional.

Your career is studying a national sales tax? That's weird. If you're just saying you're a CPA, big deal, so are a bunch of us.

I am correct that the average person will pay more total tax under a "consumption tax with no exemptions" system.

If the same amount of taxes were collected, by definition, the average person would pay the same. It may be a different person, but the average on each side would be the same.

Wut?

The super rich generally just save and invest more, which likely won't be taxed under your consumption tax.

The super rich would still buy a bunch of shite, but sure, they save and invest. They also currently have lots of loopholes to protect them. You are overlooking the contributions that would suddenly be made my drug dealers, pimps, prostitutes, and every other person who receives unreported income.

You are just flat wrong.

Well, you do stare at this all day apparently, so maybe I should concede.

That's why you don't have a flat rate consumption tax without exemptions.

You aren't doing a very good job of arguing against the idea of a consumption tax. You're just arguing against a simplistic understanding of how it would need to be implemented.

Property taxes are the bottom. If you lose your job or become disabled and have no income, at least you have no tax. Property taxes don't stop, even if can't work.

I get the sentiment. But if you don’t work you aren’t footing the property tax bill on your section 8 or if you live in a tent under a bridge or in a drug encampment in California. Or if you are an illegal getting a room off the taxpayer.

I may be wrong but churches wouldn’t pay property taxes either.

When the government relies on taxing individual income, it shifts from serving its citizens to exploiting them as a revenue source

This is what modern economists fail to grasp when they dismiss tariffs, sales taxes, or luxury taxes as harmful.
Thats true of any method taxation. All taxation is exploitation. The idea that tariffs, sales taxes, luxury taxes do not exploit consumers is silly.

They clearly do.

It’s why the Clinton “luxury” tax on yachts killed off the small boat building industry. The buyers did not submit to the exploitation.

A simple primer on the income tax should be sufficient to ending it

* Created in 1913
* Rate doubled in 1916
* Prices were not reduced in relation to tariffs ending
* WWI ended in 1918
* US soldiers returned home to find out what they did before the war, was bringing home less, after taxes
* Which brought on a depression in 1920. Families had less money to spend
* That directly led to the great depression because malaise set in. Why work harder for less pay?
* This led to the socialist policies of FDR. More taxes = more govt work
* Which led to the largest debt in US history per GDP in 1945

And here we are today. Bloated taxes, bloated govt workforce

She's right. It's a fricking fleecing while our infrastructure crumbles around us.

I'll never understand why this doesn't unite both sides, everyone should be furious about this theft.

At the least, property taxes should be a one time sales tax paid at time of purchase. You can pay a lump sum, or if you get a mortgage you can incorporate the lump sum amount into your payments and pay it over time. But once you pay that amount that’s it, when you own the property outright there is no further taxes on it

Ok... a) what's the tax rate and b) how are you going to pay for the ongoing expenses of the city/county? Fire, Police, administration, trash pickup, roads (yes they are generally bad... but still), schools (again, yes, they generally suck, but you can't say 'they suck, let's not fund them at all') and all of the ancillary services that need paying for? A city/county sales tax on top of the state sales tax and the national sales tax that you want in place of income tax? You are rather easily getting to be upwards of a 50% sales tax, assuming you exclude groceries.

Not saying I'm pro property tax, just saying that stuff still has to be paid for.

I got ripped to shite in another thread when I stated that roughly 40% of my income goes to some form of a tax.

It’s way more than 40% for most of us. We pay 15% in social security taxes, including the company match. Now, that portion needs to be added to the total income, as well, but it still probably comes to 14%. If you pay a blended 25% in income taxes you are now up to 39%. You still haven’t paid property taxes or sales taxes. I think the average working family has to be over 50%.

Something like that, but I wasn’t trying to brag, I’m just so PO with the amount of taxes we pay out the arse for EVERYTHING!!
So the corrupt government can give it away to other countries or to the cheaters in the Democratic Party!!
