Politics might be my interest online... but offline, with family and friends, I tend to be in the moment and loving them. Even my young, pierced, often blue haired severely lefty relative- love her to pieces.
I'm not sacrificing what's real- family and friends... for the fake outrage that is modern politics.
Holy shite. A functional adult.

I have one liberal and three conservative family members who have cut me off because I refuse to see their way. Oh well.

"could"???? did that a long time ago, no regrets whatsoever

The thought crossed my mind when a nephew the day after the election blasted everyone that voted for Trump in a (? Drunken) rant, calling anyone who did the words the left used (fascist). He lives in Michigan so I don’t have to deal with him or his enabling wife. Finally, I realized it really didn’t matter. His mother, my sister, didn’t respond to him either.

I wouldn't want to.
My sister is a Democrat. I would not want to cut her off.

It would depend on their behavior. I have many friends and family members that are liberal. We normally get along great.
I do know a few in the last few years that have gone certifiably insane, though. I feel bad for them because they are completely broken people.

I generally only require my friends to be able to discuss college football for 30+ minutes at a time.

It’s a bit more nuanced than that, but I agree, in general. In my experience, leftists do the “cutting off” without any action from me.

I could see doing that if not doing so was more detrimental to my family, but only for a time. The person being "cut off" would need to be given opportunity for change. I don't think a permanent disassociation is warranted.

Already done it… When it comes to social media, conservatives tend to target the politician and leave it at that. Liberals tend to not only target the politician but anyone that voted or supports them. They go full blast with accusations of racism, homophobia, and always like to draw ties to Nazi Germany. They tend to think with a different part of the brain the most…Have had to 86 a handful of friends for that very reason.

Those people and OP are just as brainwashed with political propaganda as each other.
My reasons for cutting people off would be stealing/cheating or destroying property… unsalvageable drug addictions (meth, heroin)… morally repugnant crimes or trying to drive wedges / personally slandering myself or someone I care about.
I disagree, sometimes strongly, with more people here than I agree with. At the end of the day would still probably give you the shirt off my back, because I was raised right by good people.
shite like the OP is really sad.
fricking internet.

I wouldn't know because I don't have any.

I had to cut off a close friend that became hard left about 5 years ago who accused me of being racist and all kinds of shite with nothing to back it up and ironically we had another close friend in our group that was mixed race. He became super left wing and I have a strong suspicion drugs were part of his meltdown. Haven't talked to him since. Sucks cause we had some good times together but wasn't worth the drama

No. I have respectful discussions with them. That’s fine, but liberals don’t want to do that.
I explained that my nephew was a commie. We had respectful conversations because we were family. When I had conversations with liberals in general they turned the discussion off politely. They knew after a few minutes that their ideas were going to get destroyed and they'd feel stupid. But my nephew wanted to hear my logic and it helped his transformation. He got a better job to make more money and at age 30 got his first girlfriend and was soon married. Women don't like young commies who have no ambition to move out of poverty.

It depends on what you mean by "if it came down to it".
If it came down to saving the life of someone? Yes
If it was over petty political differences? Perhaps. I have no problem not discussing politics with people who disagree with me. It would be their decision to cut me off. I would make it clear to just leave politics out of a friendship when there are many other things we have in common.

Agreed. I interpreted "if it came down to it" as some point where a line is crossed (violent actions, illegal activities, etc.). If so, no hestation. I wouldn't expect that from any family members or friends ... but there are some in-laws in the NE.
