The 2014 Sochi Olympics are on track to be the costliest ever -- with the Russian government shelling out an estimated $50 billion on the Winter Games and related infrastructure.

The plan was to spend $12 billion.

Next: Athens.

Not sure, but whoever NBC is using for "color" on their skating nowadays leaves no doubt. (Johnny Weir I think)

To be fair the winter olympics qualify as gay propaganda if you ask me. Hockey and curling aside.

Has the whole concept of the Olympics jumped the proverbial shark?

I say, it has.

Are you sure about curling? I've got suspicions after watching how some of those people use their brooms. The furious short strokes. Do I need to say more?

To celebrate the accomplishments of incredibly athletic human beings, and show that sports can overcome political issues?

Yes.

How can anyone consider a degree of fairness when Putin has made his friends rich beyond all imagination in spending more money than all winter Olympics combined?

There's an economist somewhere (I know, not very descriptive) who has done some research on the public spending for the olympics, and he concludes that countries/cities don't make their money back on these huge projects.

He did point out some good developments that have come from Olympic games (downtown Atlanta, Athens' renovated subway system, etc.) but, largely, a shitload of money is poured into building these stadiums and shite that are never used. He used London and Beijing as his primary examples.
