Americans' finances are continuing to improve. Median household income rose to $61,400 in 2017, up 1.8% from a year earlier, according to data released by the US Census Bureau on Tuesday. The report is the first look at the nation's fortunes under the Trump administration. The increase continues a streak of strong income growth that began in 2015 during President Barack Obama's second term. Median income grew 3.2% in 2016 and 5.2% the year before. The poverty rate, meanwhile, dropped to 12.3%, down from 12.7% the prior year

my son has a job making $20/hr and he's in college. he could do that fulltime and make $40k/yr just starting out.

when i graduated in 1990 it took me 5 years until i was up to 32k and i thought i was a damn millionaire

Well, $32k in 1995 is worth about $51k today.

When I graduated from law school, typical starting salaries in the Nola area were 25K for first year associates. Times damned sure have changed.

inflation calculator

Yeah. I don't think some people realize how inflated the dollar is now.

40K today was essentially 25k in 1995.

I was about to add. This is one of those things that will be skewed.

They will tell you the good news. Middle Class Income jumps to $61K, the bad news fewer people are considered Middle Class.

When was that? Due to inflation, there may not be that much of a disparity.

Shreveport TV news reporting Vivian having trouble hiring cops. Pay is $11/hr PT and $13/hr FT. No wonder they have trouble, especially since CostCo announced minimum now $14/hr for them.

I get cost of living is different living in a small city like Vivian, but no way I'd be a cop for $13/hr

Inflation has been virtually no different from 1988 to present than it was before.

If anything, it's been much more modest and much less volatile during the past thirty years than it used to be.

That's $45,500 approximately in 2018.
