And academic plagiarism is OK when it is done by the head of fricking Harvard as long as she represents enough “oppressed” groups?

BTW, when does Big Mike’s thesis get released for public consumption?

Copying other people's writings without attribution is the definition of plagiarism.

Reminds me of an old Monty Python satire on the Kray Brothers from the 60s.

“Let us remember that murder is no more than an extroverted suicide.”

Oh, well, that certainly changes everything. She should get her job back with a hefty raise for the trouble she's been put through. She should also sue anyone and everyone who accused her plagiarism. Clearly she wasn't plagiarizing, she was, for lack of a better word, borrowing her own ideas from others who better expressed them in words.

I feel like that’s quite literally the definition of plagiarism

Implying that poor attribution is anything other than plagiarism isn’t mental gymnastics. It’s crashing crotch-first onto the balance beam.

What they are apparently trying to do is separate the arguments/ideas she allegedly created from the research/citations that create the backbone of the defense of the arguments/ideas.

This standard isn't applied to any students across the US, obviously.

What’s amazing to me is that this story went through, I am assuming, at least 1 editor before being published. That editor read this sentence
quote:

She’s been accused of, sort of, more like copying other people’s writings without attribution. So it's been more sloppy attribution than stealing anyone’s ideas,

and gave the writer a pass. A cardinal sin in journalism, plagiarism, was allowed to be passed off as “coping other people’s writings without attribution“ by at least 1 editor at a major “news” corporation. This is why no one trust the news media

It's completely okay to "steal ideas" or copy writings, as long as there is proper attribution (unless it is TM or copywritten, then you need rights).

But Gay didn't do that, did she?

My father retired a few years back with way too much time on his hands so he started voluntarily reviewing doctoral papers for dissertations. They got really upset with how much plagiarism he found…

When you don't give attribution to the original Author, then that is you trying to make it your own.

It’s not crazy town.

The left has figured out how powerful it is to, in mass, defend EVERYTHING their side does while condemning EVERYTHING their opponents do.

It’s such a powerful tool given how social media and short attention spans work. The tactic works flawlessly with women, too.

Women somehow care juuust enough to be tricked by the 24/7 in your face here and gone driveby social media news but not enough to like, look into anything to get a sense of what’s actually going on.

I experienced something similar during my last 18 months of instruction. It was a homogenized program, so there was always some degree of similarity in the deliverables. I found an obvious case of a short paper being copied. The students involved even admitted to "sharing an outline", which I thought was bad enough but the final submissions were about 80% identical, including grammar choices.

The powers that be pushed back on my analysis and let it slide.

This work was, on paper, graduate level.
