But they are still public officials you dumbass.

Wait a minute...are you a public official?

Sounds like someone in charge with Homeland Security didn't do their due diligence and the city didn't ask enough questions. If DHS can buy such a facility, they need to drop a well real quick.

They need to build a runway right next to the facility and start flying these people back to where they came from

So, in your mind, the feds that bought the building are the same as the local officials who are saying the building was not built for the purpose?

I honestly can't understand what point you are trying to make.

Who knew what when is my question. If the city approved this detention center, they had to have known the infrastructure situation that it would cause prior to approval. If DHS withheld that information, why?

Who says they approved it? I was an industrial warehouse the DHS bought.

Seems to be a thing they are doing a lot of.

ICE is paying 'eye-popping' prices for warehouse detention centers

I forget, are we still against wasteful spending (or at least asking questions)?

The article points out that comparing purchase prices to tax valuations is not a reliable metric, but they also cite sales of the same property at much lower prices in the last couple of years. Somebody is cleaning up.

My younger boy and his wife are both Army. The stories I hear from them about what is spent in their world is mind boggling. Example: $200K/month in rent for office space of about 8,000 sq ft.

According to the news report the city officials are worried about running out of water as the detention center doubles the amount of people who live in the town.

Wasn't there a prison in the Everglades. Plenty of water there.

The facility was built as a warehouse. Apparently the Lesee backed out and a new renter stepped in. Unfortunately the owner waited until the last minute to ask the City about the impact on the services system. No skin off the government, they tell the City and owner “Not this time” and skip down the road.

I know quite a bit about this area and what's going on around there. In the last 10 years, there's been a large pharma plant go operational, a huge META data center go operational and across interstate 20 is the Rivian plant that may one day be operational. So there's a lot going on off this one exit.

I could see major issues with water and sanitation if the detention center also goes operational. Completely different than the requirements of a shipping warehouse. Not saying it can't get done, just a lot more due diligence and maybe independent infrastructure is needed.

If I am the Feds, I would put in a big military cemetery right behind the city managers home.

Really?

Perhaps the Feds should increase the town's water capacity by building some infrastructure improvements to actually address the issue.

Are you saying the Feds did not get a water meter installed prior to building the facility?

They didn't build the facility. It is a warehouse, not a housing structure for 10,000 people.

There is a decent amount of wrong information being mentioned so I'll try and paint a fuller picture as I live in the county that this is happening.

The City officials were not told about the facility being purchased or converted until after DHS had made the purchase. They basically found out when the public did.

Social Circle is a relatively rural suburb about 45 minutes outside of Atlanta. The infrastructure is flat out not there.

The City has a population of about 5,000 people and overnight DHS wants to bring in 10,000 detainees and (their number) 2000 employees. Effectively tripling the population of a very small city.

The water situation is a very real issue, most of us here are on septic, we dont have the sewer infrastructure that is needed for something of this size.

The local government has been trying to bring some form of rational to all of this but DHS has been extremely stubborn and unwilling to really work with them.

Basically the local government was told overnight and without their input that they were now going to have their population triple in 3-4 months time (this all started at the end of last year) without any real plan on how to make that a reasonable reality.

This is a very red area, Trump won 73% of the votes. The local government are all republicans and basically always have been.

Their political leaning on whats happening can only take them so far when its their city to have to try and manage when they are staring down a basically unwinnable task.

Was this a secret kept from the "city officials"?

Why didn't they raise the concerns earlier?

It was kept from them.

This started popping up in Decemberish, the city officials basically found out when the public did. After the building was already purchased with the intent to retrofit it to hold detainees.

The news may just now be going national due the to larger act of turning off the water. But Ive been reading local articles for months about this. And they have been yelling about the water situation since the beginning.

Here was their initial response on 12/31/2025:

City of Social Circle Statement Regarding Reports of a Proposed ICE Detention Facility
Post Date:12/31/2025 3:48 PM

Recent reports in the Washington Post and other media outlets tell of a proposed federal detention facility associated with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) possibly being located within the city limits of Social Circle.

According to reporting by The Washington Post, the plan under consideration includes renovating industrial warehouse facilities to hold between 5,000 and 10,000 people being staged for deportation.

The City of Social Circle has not been informed of any proposed detention facility. City officials learned of the media report at the same time as the public. To date, no representative of the federal government, ICE, or the property owner has contacted the City in any way, nor has the City received an application related to detention operations.

City staff and elected officials are actively seeking confirmation from state and federal partners that no such facility will be located within the City or the surrounding areas.

A key reason that such a facility is infeasible is because the City does not have the water and sewer infrastructure to support this type of facility. Current capacity limitations would not support a development of the size described in media reports. This proposal could result in an effective tripling of the City’s population that is hovering right around 5,000 citizens.

In addition to the lack of water and sewer capacity, there is not a site within the City that will provide a safe distance from homes, businesses, and schools. The City will not tolerate a failure in security.

The Mayor and City Council of the City of Social Circle unequivocally does not support an ICE detention facility in the City or the surrounding areas. City officials are evaluating what authority, if any, the City has in this matter and will continue to oppose any efforts of this kind through all appropriate channels.

As more verified information becomes available, the City is committed to keeping residents informed in a transparent and timely manner.

Also of note this site is located less than a mile from an elementary school. Your feelings on illegals may be one way. But when they start bussing in 10,000 of them 3 minutes from where your 7 year old plays on a playground you may not be as excited.

OK, Deep Thinker. If you suddenly put 10,000 detainees in a big building that was built to hold boxes, what’s your plan for dealing with the water and sewage demands?

Bottled water. shite in holes in the ground. All illegals deported from facility in 48 hours.

Easy peasy.

The problem is all the assholes demanding illegal invaders be given rights their ancestors didn't earn and all the crybabies demanding endless appeals and cushy conditions for criminals.
