I have my doubts. Most of this equipment has restricted and closely monitored connections.

If they did (they don't), they would not dare be used.

If the Chinese cut off transformers in our grid that would be a direct declaration of war and they won’t do that.

Some other country could do it.

I think you people are missing the point. What if we were at war with them? They could just shutdown the grid or major parts of it.

I agree. It would need an independent comm unit that would be pretty easy to find. Without that it would still pass through the utilities EMS.

ETA. I would be way more worried about them hacking a utility with shitty security and hitting the disco switch on all the meters.

Sigh, this was to be used when war breaks out, not before hand. China has been preparing to rule the world for decades. They know war is coming and will be required. What a great weapon to have to be able to shut down the power grid of your enemy and halt the production of military equipment and ammo just when you are trying to ramp it up.

This concern has been kicked around for years.
It's totally reasonable to suspect this. Even more reason that America needs to quickly begin to develop resources to produce these things ourselves. frick the business traitors suing Trump about tariffs. Folks must wake up and understand the reality.

As someone with industrial power distribution knowledge, I want to see schematically how this "shut off" switch works.

Also, what are they referring to as massive? 80MVA? 115MVA? 200MVA?

For the general knowledge of the board, massive power transformers do not have switches internally. They are isolated/ energized via a circuit breaker or circuit switcher with primary voltages in the hundreds of thousands of volts (115kv, 230kv, 500kv) these switches are equally as massive.

The circuit breaker is controlled via contacts, relays, or remote hand switches to open or close.

Oh do you?

There is a reason the government wont use Chinese hardware for sensitive things. They build their own.
