Thoughts on this?
Trudeau came out and said China's decision to execute him is "arbitrary".

I wonder what the American public reaction would be to this if it was an American being executed... especially a person of color.

BEIJING — China’s diplomatic clash with Canada escalated sharply on Monday, when a Chinese court swiftly sentenced a Canadian to death for drug smuggling at the end of a one-day retrial that was ordered weeks after a Chinese executive was arrested in British Columbia. The court in northeastern China announced the death penalty against the Canadian, Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, after a retrial that lasted one day, and gave no indication that his sentence might be reduced to prison time.
Mr. Schellenberg’s fate is likely to become a volatile factor in diplomacy between Beijing and Ottawa after the Canadian authorities arrested a Chinese technology executive last month. Last month, a court ordered a retrial of Mr. Schellenberg after he appealed a 15-year prison sentence for smuggling methamphetamines. But against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions between China and Canada, the court sided with prosecutors who called for a stiffer sentence.
quote:
Before his arrest in 2014, Mr. Schellenberg, 36, had been an adventurous traveler who used earnings from working in Alberta’s oil fields to pay for his travels in Asia, Ms. Nelson-Jones said by telephone. Mr. Schellenberg grew up in Abbotsford, British Columbia, surrounded by a large extended family. He kept in irregular contact with his family as he roamed around Asia, especially Thailand, Ms. Nelson-Jones said. “He called and told his dad — my brother — that he was heading off to China, and it was just like, ‘O.K., whatever,’” she said.
About a month later, Mr. Schellenberg’s family learned that he had been arrested. Mr. Schellenberg was detained for 15 months before his first trial, and it took an additional 32 months before a court declared him guilty and sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
quote:
“This is the first death sentence handed down to a North American by a Chinese court in memory, maybe forever,” Mr. Kamm said. “I expect a furious reaction from Ottawa and the Canadian people.”
I wonder what the American public reaction would be to this if it was an American being executed... especially a person of color.

This is why foreign travel is overrated.
My chances of ending up in a story like Brokedown Palace or Midnight Express are pretty damn low anyplace in the US outside of Chicago.

It's not as if Canada can do anything about it.

Trump would have gotten him freed unlike beta males Barry and Justin

If it’s actual drug smuggling, I’d agree.
For all we know this is the dude whose luggage was used to mule in the meth.

Note to self...check drug laws and prison conditions of foreign country BEFORE smuggling drugs in that foreign country...

This is a bad look for China, not that they care. Executing westerners for petty offenses is something the North Koreans would do.

This sounds like the Chinese are preparing for a prisoner exchange with Canada.

The Chinese govt just told our president they were going to start giving the death penalty to drug dealers....well there ya go, just didnt know it would be a convenient Canadian.
You know tensions are high, have been for over a year, and a Canadian is just a northern US citizen to most foreign countries, why on earth travel there, much less buy drugs?
Like the ignorant couple that wandered into Iran while hiking and the wife was pregnant, wasnt that idiot husband a Cannuck as well?

By the way fellas, God bless the US Marines who guard our embassies.
First year I was here the Marines were having their kiddy picnic on the 4th and asked if I could sell them some Pepsi cheap. I told them no, but Id give it to them, along with a boatload of Cheetos/Doritos/Lays and some trash and trinkets for the kids.
They said you ever get in trouble dont bother with the Embassy, just call us direct, bypass the protocol. But tell the wife not to call it if you lost your dog or your car broke down unless you want a international incident on your hands.
State department is a waste of time, but I love me some Marines.

Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, 36, formerly of Abbotsford, was sentenced to one year in prison in February 2010 and two years of probation on three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, according to the online provincial court database.
He was also charged with four more offences – two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and two counts of possession of a controlled substance – in August 2011.
That case went to trial in B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack, and Schellenberg was convicted of all four charges in 2012 and sentenced to two years in prison. Minus credit for time in pre-trial custody, Schellenberg spent another 16 months in jail.
All of these charges were based in Abbotsford.
