No it’s not. The goal isn’t to lift them up. It’s to buy votes and create a dependency to that politician. And it’s fairly successful.

It’s hush money. They already vote for them with ballot harvesting.

Here’s $500 to ignore all the bullshite you see going on around you, your infrastructure crumbling and your schools becoming worthless.

The drug dealer angle is there too. How much of this money is washed back to politicians?

It's a $30M project so I don't think a million people are getting this

I suppose they never considered instead investing that into a semester or two at a vocational/trade school.

It’s income dependent so those that don’t work get more free stuff. Oh yeah, “undocumented residents” qualify too.

That will temporarily...... do nothing!

So Biden fricks up the economy, and inflation soars, then he gives people free money to make them feel better, all to stockpile DEM future votes.

This is impeachable IMO, period!

Isn't Chicago broke? As in, cannot even pay pensions to retirees. And now, they are giving money to ones who don't contribute to anything but worse schools and homicide rates...

Isn't there a mayor election coming up soon? This should be illegal so close to an election.

They're probably getting it from an NGO slush fund that runs on public money.

So 5k people in a city with poverty easily in the high 6 figures. Would be interesting if any of the mayoral candidates will call this out to see if anyone in politics have friends/family getting this payoff...I mean...benefit.

I like how none of these UBI pilot programs are never universal. They are always targeted at the poor. How can you see the true impacts of UBI if the grant is only going to people who are going to immediately spend it.

Precisely.

The idea is to create the perception that these programs are successful, then try to expand them. They'll use deceptive terminology to make it all easier to accept.

Link you apply.

Link says it's just a one time relief payment of 500, not the monthly described in the OP

Unless I'm missing something

Also eligibility threshold is set at or below 300% of the federal poverty level

The creditors were closing in, the rent notices piling up. And then a helping hand came late last summer from Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s administration: the first of a year’s worth of monthly $500 checks, with no strings attached and almost no questions asked. “Talk about shock,” said Mr. Ellington, 32. “It was ‘Hey, the government is doing this? Wait a minute. I don’t have to, you know, report this and report that, and you don’t have to go through all of my business and I don’t have to watch what I say?’ I was like, ‘This is how it should be.’”

Both Chicago and Cook County are tapping money sent to local governments through the 2021 pandemic relief law known as the American Rescue Plan.
