Four cartel gunmen carrying rifles and handguns stormed into a bar in the tourist resort city of Cancun and began firing indiscriminately. The attack on Friday left five dead and 12 others injured.
The shooting took place Friday night at approximately 11:43 p.m., according to a local media report. The attack took place at the La Kuka Bar located at Avenida José López Portillo and Súper Manzana 60 Manzanas 8, within the municipality of Benito Juarez where Cancun is located.

Initial reports indicate that the gunmen entered the establishment armed with one rifle and four handguns. Without warning, the cartel gunmen began firing indiscriminately at employees and bar patrons.

There have been five recent attacks at bars in Cancun and the nearby resort city of Playa del Carmen. All of the attacks are believed to have been perpetrated by criminal gangs tied to drug cartels. The most recent occurred in Playa del Carmen last month when two gunmen stormed a bar and killed seven people.

Officials in Cancun reported 60 homicides this year while Playa del Carmen tallied 27, according to records from the state attorney generals office as reported in local media. In 2018, Cancun broke its all-time record for homicides with 546 recorded.

Cancun Homicide Cases Per Year

2018 — 546
2017 — 227
2016 — 61

Guess I’ll stick with 30A or Orange Beach for when I want to dip my toes in the sand.

The Mexican authorities used to do a fantastic job of keeping the tourist cities relatively safe. I remember some years back when the beheadings happened near Acapulco - I said then, "Beginning of the end of Mexican tourism."

And here we are. I would, maybe consider going to Cozumel, just because it's an island and easily securable. But, unlikely.

Think how safe New Orleans or Washington, D.C. (relatively dangerous cities by U.S. standards) are compared to any place in Latin America.

We need Conan to take an instagram selfie from Cancun to let us know it's not a shithole.

Going to those kinds of places in Mexico is about the same kind of stupid as a bunch of white teenagers going to a North Baton Rouge neighborhood bar.

Go to Mexico. Stay in the resorts. Take the sponsored tours. Don't venture out to discover the "real" Mexico on your own. It'd be like me going out to discover the "real" Dallas by going to a bar in South Dallas. The risk factor is just stupidly high.

That's not located in the tourist zone. It's in the city. No tourist should venture there. I did during the 1990s and it was sketchy back then.

Agree. Mafia for most part wanted to fly under radar, at least families that were in it for long run.

Cartels DGAF. Terror is a tool. The more horrific, the better. Hanging multiples off bridge. Sending heads.

This thread and the thread on the OT about Mexican cartels have firmly persuaded me NOT to take the family vacation to Cabo this summer.

I need other options. Probably the BVIs.

Jesus, GP, get a grip. Go to Cabo San Lucas. It's great. You'll have a great time. Go fishing. One of the best places in the world for billfish. Don't go to San Jose del Cabo if you are worried.

Don't go to Mazanilla/Ixtapa though. That place is nice, but it's in the middle of cartel country.

A few months ago I was considering moving for a while to Tulum for the heck of it but due to the recent rise of crime on the Yucatan I have changed my mind. Sad because it's such a beautiful place and there are investment opportunities in Tulum I am passing on.
