Can we be objective about Texas for a moment? Has Abbott failed this leadership test?

This is an honest question. Could he have done anything differently to mitigate what’s happening?

Does he have any culpability?

Any Texans here wanna weigh in?

I’m sorry. They are complaining about Texas not being ready for a 100 year disaster?

Who would be?

And I have critiques on Abbott. This isn’t one of them

As a 50-year old that has never voted for anyone other than a Republican as governor - yes.

Our shitty infrastructure fails every hurricane/heat wave/cold snap leaving millions without power or water. The roads are crap and freeways are underwater for hours or days after storms.

This has gotten worse over the years while costing more.

This is a basic responsibility of government - and Texas leadership has failed miserably.

I mean it honestly wasn’t that bad. Lots of stores have kept up supplies. He prioritized gas to homes which allowed for heating and cooking where available. I don’t really mind minor inconveniences for a week for a once in a generation event. How many died from the conditions vs dying from stupidity?

Should he have passed regulation on wellhead winterization? Pipeline winterization? The failure here is being a southern state and the folks living there, doing biz there not making the uneconomic decision to prepare for Canadian weather. It sucks now but imagine trying to get people to pay more for energy a year ago to prep for an extremely rare event. You’d have been told to GFY.

It looks bad but honestly I don't think anyone else would be different. Just a ridiculous amount of extreme conditions thrown into play. Realistically it's hard for anyone to look good here.

Are you really shocked that a t-sip would fail in a leadership position?

First LBJ, then Kay Bailout, now Abbott.

I’m in Houston. Anyone downplaying this is a partisan hack. No power for many for over 60 hours in freezing temperatures. No water. This is a massive frick up. Anyone thinking the Governor will be comfortable resting on his laurels of muh 100 years is a retard. Heads will roll.

Clearly this means it's time for Abortion Barbie or Loopy Lupe to unseat him, right?

I’m also going to guess you’ve never lived in another state. I grew up in Texas and never lost power in the heat or cold.

Again, you’re whining about a fricking snowstorm in Texas, allocating a small portion to winterization would have been laughable and used as a political smear campaign as this is so far from the norm or thinkable for Texas

We had a similar power grid failure like 10 years ago. That should’ve probably changed how the state prepares for stuff like this. That’s probably not on Abbott though.

Legitimately asking questions here, is this often the case? I'm younger (early 30s) but I don't recall another Harvey or winter storm on this scale.

Honestly with something like Harvey idk what you could do preparation wise outside of evacuations and such. Same with this. If there are failures whenever certain areas get popped (west TX I'd guess) and they didn't adapt I'd understand. As an outsider it seems overkill to make "prepare for a week of arctic weather" SOP.

All that said, I'm not trying to make a point, I'm genuinely curious as to how this is an Abbott thing.
