Yep. Might not be able to destroy the actual site, but they could make it almost impossible to access. And then they can still destroy all the support infrastructure.

Did we ever do anything with Project Thor, or was that all just theory?
If we did, just how deep could it hit?

A tungsten rod shot from space. Interesting.

Interesting that given there is no "explosive payload", it seems to skirt past a lot of treaties banning weapons in space.
I've seen a couple youtube videos debunking it, but their main argument was that "it's too expensive". My response to that is, since when has the US ever worried about how much something costs? We just print more money.
And on a more practical note, I'm seeing the cost of each rod would be roughly 230 million, whereas a strategic ICBM would cost about 210 million. But this wouldn't leave fallout, and only a few countries would even know what really happened.

The US would be like, “Oh, your underground nuclear facility blew up? Damn, that’s a shame. Y’all really need to be more careful. That nuclear shite is dangerous stuff.”

What I'm reading, 1 rod hitting at Mach 10 (expected impact velocity) would leave a crater nearly 100 ft deep, presumably in rock or concrete. That's not calculating the shockwave travelling downwards from the impact.
That has to be a pretty significant thump. Might be enough to just squash anything down there.

Near a peak of the Zagros Mountains in central Iran, workers are building a nuclear facility so deep in the earth that it is likely beyond the range of a last-ditch U.S. weapon designed to destroy such sites, according to experts and satellite imagery analyzed by The Associated Press.
bullshite, I seen Maverick go into an inverted decent over a mountain and blow up a uranium enrichment facility. Beyond our range my arse.

Do you mean at all or to hold the entire country? For instance, do they not have the ability to assault the facility with ground forces? I'm not up on Israeli military capabilities.
How do they get sufficient numbers of troops on the ground to attack/destroy a nuclear facility in a hostile foreign country? Then get them back out?
It would be a suicide mission for the troops.

Stuxnet and it's ancillary viruses were terrifying.
I read where we gave it to Israel but had them limit the capacity of it, much to their disagreement.
Apparently we were aware that the Iranian govt was so centralized that if we allowed "the full monty" it would shut down most things centrally controlled by the govt....water, power, dams, traffic, everything, and cause panic in the entire country.

Well the atomic energy inspection team from the UN says that no nuclear facilities were hit.
Since they arent even allowed within 50 miles of their top secret facility, and never have been........Im certain their info is reliable.

Bombs dont have to penetrate the facility. If it is deep in the mountain.....maybe we bring the mountain to them. Im sure with enough bunker busters we could bury that thing under half the dirt in Iran.

Exactly. But Iran has rebuilt it since then

quote:The problem with that, if you can't hit and affect the actual facility, is being sure you know all the entrances and tunnels. If there's 3 ways in, and we knock out 1, it will be up and running again in less than a week (ok, probably longer, just so we don't instantly see and hit the other entrances. But the point remains).

Iran isn't a desert, it's mountainous and rocky. They may have a damn subway system running 20 miles away. You miss that, and it's all pointless.

Thank you for that most riveting piece of information. We are all better off knowing it.

I’m sure there are reasons to argue that it wouldn’t work, but some kind of a boring robot would come in super handy here.
