I'd rather drag my sack across rusty barbed wire than live in California.

Fuuuuck that place.

California is actually a great place to live. It's just an expensive place to live.

The homeless that our D run state let out of jail and on to the streets seem to be living a quality life in this weather

Eh to each there own. I've been there enough to know I want nothing to do with it.

Now if you could make all the people currently living there disappear...that would be a different story.

Don't get me wrong, California the state is beautiful. It's the people I can't stand.

Louisiana is great! Love the state. For the most part the people are friendly, helpful, and enjoy life. Good combination.
Agree, but then you toss in shitty, corrupt government, bad schools, bad roads and bridges, environmental problems, culcha and a penchant for laziness to change anything for the better, and suddenly, all those friendly, helpful people don't matter as much. I love the people , the fishing, the fun and the food in Louisiana. In fact, I'd go so far as calling them the best people in the whole country for fun loving and friendliness. But they're the worst at demanding change because they're too focused on having fun.

Still interested in how you separate "quality of life" from healthcare, crime, education, economic opportunity, etc.

The US News "Quality of Life" metric has two components:

Natural environment: drinking water quality (Safe Drinking Water Act violation points per 1000 residents), toxic chemical pollution per square mile, health risk of pollution per capita, and urban air quality

Social environment: community engagement--average satisfaction and participation in community events (PTA, volunteering, churches, sporting events, etc.); social support--average satisfaction and frequency of participation in social events as well as how supported people feel by their social networks and how often they give or receive unpaid help; and 2016 voter participation rate in the presidential election

That's it?

I wonder if the South scores high there because we are so involved in churches. Would really boost the social environment points.

Not have to worry about locking every door, installing crime cameras, and not walking in areas of your city after dark is liberating. That and not dropping $8000-20,000 per kid on private school a year probably helps as well.

I have to agree with this and the fact that it's just very expensive to live in the nicer areas, but "worst quality of life in the U.S."
These studies are always a joke due to the methodology used in the ranking. It's a huge state with a shite load of people and therefore has more homeless, unemployed, wealthy, educated, etc than most states. My post history clearly shows that I'm not a California cheerleader, but list is a joke.

Thanks, actually. Seems a little "soft" and tougher to quantify, but at least they defined it.

Just shows you no matter how beautiful the scenery or how much government control, liberals are never happy.

I absolutely loved SoCal. Granted I was on per diem and living in a hotel (not paying their taxes, etc) the entire 6 months that I was there. So my impression is that it's an absolutely beautiful place if you're not hurting for money and/or trying to open a small business.

San Diego is still my favorite city in North America.

Yeah. Don't know where LA got the rep. Something must be in the water in San Diego. There were still plenty of hot white chicks too the last time I visited. Been a few years, though.

I have a very soft spot for the redwoods and the coast above the Bay. Were CA ever to split, I would move there in a hearbeat. Rural folks, especially in NorCal, are about as libertarian as anywhere you'll find outside of New Hampshire.

You've got to be a senior level executive, celebrity, doctor, or well-connected attorney to not be hurting for money. Maybe not so bad in the rural areas, but the fact that a $100k/year salary isn't considered middle class for a family in LA or SF is crazy to me.
