The federal budget deficit totaled $830 billion in the first five months of fiscal year 2024, CBO estimates. That amount is $108 billion more than the deficit recorded during the same period last fiscal year.

For this to occur in peacetime while the economy is growing and we face a coming tsunami of spending on an aging population for social spending and healthcare is both a disgrace and something to be very worried about.

It's not peacetime. We may not be doing the fighting, but we're damn sure paying for a war.

The MIC didn't get to eat for 4 years and they're getting it now.

Definitely sustainable

That 50 billion a year from extra billionaire taxes will crush this though !

Did you notice Matt Gaetz escaped from federal prison, and was that the speech last night?

Didn’t you vote for this or am I thinking of someone else? Didn’t Trump basically break you? Didn’t you have to start taking pills? Or am I thinking of someone else?

We're not going to pay it off and any plans to do so would be foolish

The responsible thing is to slow the growth of the debt by running smaller deficits

The MIC fed at the trough plenty under Trump. He set records for military spending.

We;re at the new normal. If they can survive with 32t debt, they'll keep kicking the can.

We've already paid the price with inflation for much of it.

BREAKING: Joe Biden’s wild economic claims during his State of the Union address were fact-checked six times by The New York Times.

“15 million new jobs in just three years — a record,” Biden claimed. • The Times ruled the claim needed context “My policies have attracted $650 billion in private sector investment, in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, creating tens of thousands of jobs here in America!” • The Times ruled Biden’s statement lacked context and Biden calculated $650

“We’ve already cut the federal deficit over a trillion dollars.” •The Times ruled Biden’s claim needed context: Under Mr. Biden’s watch, the federal deficit dropped to $1.4 trillion in fiscal year 2022 from $3.1 trillion in fiscal year 2021 — but much of that reduction was attributed to the expiration of coronavirus relief spending. The deficit then rose in 2023, to about $1.7 trillion. The deficit remains higher than it was before the coronavirus pandemic.

We haven't had a surplus in 25 years and haven't come close to a balanced budget since W's first couple of years.

Every ten years there seems to be some crisis that "requires" loads of federal spending.

The status quo needs to change.
