What's been your great contribution thus far, shepherd?

I don't understand your assertion that the signatures are slow going. They are coming along pretty dang quickly, when you factor in the dirty city politicians attempting to strong arm anyone who facilitates a petition drive.
You are mistaken if you think St George is slowing down.

Yep, and after reading in the Advocate what occurred at the Metro Council meeting last night, I'm tempted to attend that little 125.00 fund raiser.
Don't like bullies, and those fools, like Delgado, Marcelle, and Collins-Lewis are just pushing more and more people to side with the City of SG.

I am exactly the same way. I don't typically spend my time and money getting involved in matters such as this and was more than happy to let it play out without any involvement on my part. But the slimy actions of Delgado et al motivated me to go sign the petition and now have motivated me to donate to the cause.

quote:I'm just comparing the petition effort by SG with the recall petition of Mayor DeeDee of Port Allen.
I don't understand your assertion that the signatures are slow going.
In the same amount of time that the SG petition has been circulating, the Port Allen petition had the required 25% of signatures, been submitted for certification and certified.
As for as anecdotal evidence, I know several families who live in the proposed SG area and none of them will sign the petition. All of them are very well educated and believe the division of the parish into two halves will hurt economic development efforts for our entire area.
Any time more politicians are given the opportunity to extort bribes.......er.......I mean, fees, just so a business can operate, it hurts the economic development.
One of the persons I know in SG who has refused to sign works at LSU in a research capacity and she is definitely leary of the negative affect a parish split will have on LSU. I did not ask her to go into detail about how it would hurt LSU but I plan on doing so the next time I see her.

Frankly many of the SG posters on here are starting to sound like the child who the big kids won't let play quarterback in their sandlot football game so he threatens to take his football and go home.
I've yet to see one single post which supports their whole "we pay more taxes than anyone else and we don't get services for it" meme.
I am patiently waiting for some to offer documented evidence for that assertion.

I would be interested in hearing how the City of SG would hurt LSU.
We have a lot of LSU connected people in my neighbourhood.
If anything, a new School System would save their kids a lot of bus time(since most of them go to Magnet Schools) or a lot of money for those who go to Private Schools.
Which to me would be a selling point for recruiting Profs and management/admin types.
And they've already made the choice to live out here.
On no, could it be the "R" word, that's already been used?

Maybe people think they'll get a better return on their taxes.
Maybe people don't like being bullied, or their complaints/concerns being ignored.
Maybe these people can afford to pay for what they want.
What's the old saying, about never going to battle with someone who buys ink by the barrel?
Same thing could apply here.
Just sayin'

They can't. It's pure propaganda and perception
The truth is that Kip Holden has steered more money into St George for infrastructure and improvements than everywhere else. That includes accounting for the fact that BR proper is more costly to provide police services to and that downtown got a fancy pants stage.
The school system is a whole different ball game.

quote:No, I'm not. I was responding directly to another poster who claimed it would benefit people in SG if their kids don't have to ride the bus to a magnet school. It was a very specific response to a very specific point made by another poster.
You make it sound like a huge majority of the kids in the St George area that are in the EBR school system attends a magnet schoo
quote:Don't guess. Find some facts and let us know.
If I had to guess, I would say that it's a very small percentage.
There are 1,500 students (round number) at BRMHS. The SG area comprises approximately 25% of the population of EBR Parish. If only 15% of the students at BRMHS come from the SG area, that means 225 students who live in SG are attending BRMHS. That is not an insignificant number. And that is just BRMHS. There are other magnet schools, both elementary and middle schools, which now are being attended by SG children.
How many T-buildings will be needed at the existing SG area schools just to absorb those students?
