Cannabis is legal in many parts of the US, but remains illegal in Russia.
Fogel, who is in his 60s, had around 17g (0.6oz) of cannabis in his luggage when he was caught on 15 August 2021 at Sheremetyevo airport, he told lawyers.
Fogel said a doctor had prescribed the drug for medical reasons after he had spinal surgery, and that he was not aware medical marijuana was illegal in Russia.

Marc Fogel is the one that deserves sympathy and outrage - his situation is heartbreaking, considering that he had an actual medical excuse

14 years for pot is harsh no doubt, but when you go to a foreign country, know their laws. Privilege and playing the gay card doesn't work everywhere. Maybe she is just now beginning to understand why that flag she won't stand for represents a difference in the world. That flag that men and women fought for and died for so she could have the freedom to act like an arse means something. Maybe she will learn that elections have consequences and that electing incompetent people because of irrational hatred isn't the way to behave.

Being so dumb as to just assume you could bring pot into another country with no problems and without educating yourself on that countries laws is not heartbreaking. Fogel is even more of a dumbass than Griner.
