This is what I don't understand. He's not a "protected news source" like 'Deep Throat', he's a guy whose identity is NEWS. Why would a NEWS agency be protecting his identity?

Probably the other way - Schiff knew the guy and had him blow the whistle (NTTAWWT). I mean, Schiff didn't "write" the memo - he probably just offered a bunch of suggestions as to what it should say.

I guarantee you we'll know the identity of the whistleblower before long. He knows the left considers him a hero, there's no way he hasn't told a couple civilians "it's me! I'm the whistleblower!"
Either it'll leak through sources close to him or he'll just want the attention and come out himself. Somebody clearly already knows since we know he's a registered Dem.

Hadn't seen that. But the lawyer he hired had previously worked as a staffer for Hillary and Schumer.
So, it's either he was referred to that attorney by Schiff or birds of a feather.
