BREAKING: Boeing to Temporarily Shut Down 737 Max Production

Boeing has decided to bring the production of its 737 Max to a temporary halt in January as it continues to grapple with fallout from two deadly crashes that have left the jet grounded for nine months, according to two people briefed on the decision.
Boeing is America’s largest manufacturing exporter and the largest component of the Dow Jones industrial average, and its decision to halt production is likely to send shocks through the American economy. It will affect suppliers around the country and plunge the company deeper into crisis.
Boeing intends to redeploy the workers building the Max to other projects, avoiding layoffs or furloughs for the time being, said the people, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss internal company decisions.
But because Boeing is not planning significant layoffs and its suppliers are distributed around the country, Ms. Houseman said the overall effect on the broader economy would most likely be muted for now.
Let's see how long it will take the regressives to blame this on the President!

Market is closed...maybe it will impact Dow futures.

It's a great Union busting ploy. They can move the restart to non union Charleston. If it ever even restarts. Boeing has an insurmountable PR problem on their hands with this jet, and ignorant travelers.

They should have been working on a new design immediately after the first crash, and definitely after the 2nd. No one wants to fly in one of these albatrosses.

The original 737 design was stretched and pulled too many times and isn't balanced anymore. They knew it and tried to make software fix the issues which didn't work. They need to start over with that size plane.

It's a plane, not a vagina

In reality the design goes all the way back to the mid fifties and the original KC 135's. It's not the fuselage that's the problem, it's the new larger engines that couldnt be fit onto the wings without screwing with the overall aerodynamics. The F-16 couldnt fly without the computer and fly by wire, it's aerodynamically unstable. Boeing tried to do the same with the MAX, having the computer make minute adjustments to keep the airplane stable, instead of redesigning the wing or a new aircraft. The MAX is a billion dollar folly.

I figured production would take a nose dive.

Well maybe it's time to get a new medium range plane off the drawing board. The 797?

This is simply ignorant.
The fix has been completed for months so the FAA needs to get off their arse. They are pissed because this issue has exposed that they weren't doing their job. So, they have been dragging their feet on the fix in order to punish Boeing financially. This move will put serious pressure on the FAA to move forward.

quote:That’s dumb. Why would the FAA want to punish Boeing financially. Boeing is suffering financially because they sold a fricked up piece of shite to the flying public and hundreds are dead because of their shortcutting.

That's true to the extent they fricked up with the MCAS system (and lack of pilot training around it) but otherwise it is a very safe airplane.
ETA: I've already explained why the FAA would want to punish them. Anybody who has ever worked with a government bureaucrat knows exactly what I am talking about.

Without MCAS it is unstable and doesn’t get certified.

The feds are going to frick up a great American company by dragging this shite out. US pilots knew this flaw existed. There were over 50 documented accounts of the same malfunction by American pilots. They were just trained well enough to intervene with no consequence.
