I don't understand why the girl scouts can't have their own equivalent of "Eagle Scout"
they do - Gold Award. Military offers a rank advance for Eagle Scouts - they do the same for Gold Award winners.
But otherwise it's not nearly as popular. Part of this is just that it's not well recongized. There aren't as many of them.
But as I posted in the O-T thread on this topic, the GSUSA is a disaster of an organization. BSA could send them the entire playbook and GSUSA would throw it away.
True story. My daughters tried out girl scouts. When the first one was old enough, I made some calls and ended up getting a call back from a regional leader. I told her by way of introduction that I was an Eagle Scout and I wanted my girls to be in scouting. She cut me off and said "Just because you are an Eagle Scout doesn't mean you know a damn thing about Girl Scouts. We are completely different".
She was right. They were completely different. They were a joke.
And for everyone melting down about co-ed scouts... do you feel the same way about co-ed schools?

Let me see if I have this correct...
The Boy Scouts, an organization created by men for boys.
A woman cloned this idea and created the Girl Scouts.
The Boy Scouts organization has been run by men since its inception over 100 years ago.
The Girl Scouts organization has been run by women since its inception over 100 years ago.
Enough females have found that the Girl Scouts doesn't offer them as much as boys get from the Boy Scouts so instead of changing the Girl Scouts to offer more they pressure the Boy Scouts to change to allow them in.
Is that about right?

Isn't that part of the point of putting your kids in scouts? Having boy time because they don't get that in other aspects of their lives. They say there will be girls-only dens, but I'm guessing it will be completely co-ed within a few years. It would no longer serve one of the purposes I'd be putting them in the scouts for in the first place.

In fact, I would dare say the entire membership drop since 2013 is due to Mormons pulling out.
Well if that true then Tboy should be one happy camper!
Unfortunately, Deseret News says your claim is incorrect.
Mormons and Scouts: What you need to know about today's announcement
By Aaron Shill @aaronshill
Published: May 11, 2017 7:25 a.m.
Some potential questions that may emerge from today's announcement about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dropping Scouting programs for young men ages 14 to 18. Much of this information is quoted from a question-and-answer news release from LDS Public Affairs:
What exactly is changing? The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will no longer sponsor Scouting programs for young men between the ages of 14 and 18. This change affects the Varsity (ages 14-15) and Venturing (ages 16-18) programs offered by the Boy Scouts of America.
Who does this affect? Latter-day Saint young men in the United States and Canada between the ages of 14-18.
When will the change take place? Jan. 1, 2018
Is the church dropping the Scouting program entirely? No. Boys ages 8-10 will continue to participate in the Cub Scout program. Boys ages 11-13 will continue to participate in the Boy Scout program. According to LDS Public Affairs, “these programs currently meet the development program needs of boys from ages 8 through 13.”
Why is the change being made? According to LDS Public Affairs, LDS young men in the United States and Canada “are not being served well by the Varsity or Venturing programs, which have historically been difficult to implement within the church.
And today from KUTV.com
LDS Church: No change to youth activities following BSA announcement
by Kimball Bennion, KUTVWednesday, October 11th 2017
(KUTV) After a historic announcement Wednesday that the Boy Scouts of America will begin letting girls participate in its scouting programs, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can expect little change in its own youth activities for girls.
The LDS Church, the Boy Scouts' largest charger organization in the United States, says it will continue running separate programs for girls within the Utah-based church.
The BSA announced Wednesday that it would begin letting girls participate in the Cub Scout program, which used to be reserved for boys between the ages of 7 and 10. The Scouts will also begin a separate program for girls that would allow them to earn the Eagle Scout award, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts program.
So LDS partially leaving BSA on January 1, 2018 cannot explain the BSA membership loss of 10% from 2013-2016.

This is an organization which has embraced extreme right positions which have led to a devastating collapse in membership.
Well if their charter and code of conduct is considered "extreme right positions" - than that's society moving the goal posts - Boy Scouts have a code and to turn their back on that and say..."sorry, our bad...we really didn't mean all those teachings, rules and codes we have been preaching the last 100 years." So, now we're going to flip-flop and give in to the slightest bit of political pressure by left-wing wackjobs.

When will the Girl Scouts and Brownies follow suit for the boys?
Posted on 10/11/17 at 3:31 pm to flyAU
I thought it would be co-ed, which is ridiculous then I saw in your article:
But what about the Girl Scouts org? I don't see why this was necessary.
quote:
Starting next year, young girls can join Cub Scout units, known as dens. Local scouting organizations can choose to have dens for girls and dens for boys. "Cub Scout dens will be single-gender — all boys or all girls," the organization said in a statement.
But what about the Girl Scouts org? I don't see why this was necessary.

I will feel extremely odd if I have to add NSFW to the title of this thread.
I was a scout back in the day and the thought of girls joining a jamboree would have added very specific concentration to my log-lashing and knot-tying.
Just sayin'...

It's not necessary from a law point. BSA and GSA successfully defeated court challenges for single gender.
There has been no outside pressure either.
This is a survival choice because the BSA has been slowly dying from lack of membership.
The GSA adamantly opposes this. The GSA are a bunch of micromanaging overbearing morons that squeeze much of the fun out for the girls and overwork their troop leaders and volunteers. This will kill GSA. The BSA allows for much greater local control. Personal observation.
It can be co-ed as the kids get older, but each local troop decide.

Boy Scouts to start allowing girls in
I'm an Eagle Scout and let me tell you, if we had girls at summer camp...
ETA the few ladies that worked at summer camp were all 10s by the end of the week. There was this one chick who worked at the horse corral at Camp Baldwin when I was 12...boy was she something else.

Church youth summer camps have boys and girls attend right? Not saying that BSA should or shouldn't let girls in, but if there is fear that it is inappropriate, we have conservative church youth camps that have boys and girls attend and have a great environment.

There is a need for male spaces. There are almost no organized initiations for boys and young men in our culture.
It's sick and twisted to see every single last one of them be taken away. It's literally the last thing our broken culture needs.

The big thing about Boy Scouts (versus cub) is boy led. The parents are supposed to be hands off. One thing I've noticed when looking at troops is the ones that have more women have more helicopter parents. That hurts their growth. Adding girls will just further distract them and neuter the whole point of the group.
