There are two completely different economic recoveries occurring among the states: a “Blue State” and a “Red State” recovery.

In the so-called “Blue States,” state and local governments have been very slow to reopen their economies, and very quick to re-close. As a result, unemployment has been consistently higher, and still totals in double digits at 10.6%.

The recovery in the “Red States”, meanwhile, has been much stronger, with unemployment at just 6.6%.

And the people who live in the “Purple States” (the swing states) have seen a mixed recovery, with unemployment at 7.8%, fittingly in between the level of the red and blue states.

The result of this will be not just differences in unemployment rates, but also differences in the multitude of other factors that unemployment affects, including state and local finances. Blue state politicians are essentially creating the circumstances that will require a bailout:

Stricter business closures -> Higher unemployment -> Decreased household incomes -> Lower tax revenues -> Worse state & local finances -> Greater need for federal bailouts

Indeed as negotiations over yet another round of federal coronavirus spending continues, one of the biggest hang ups is that blue states and municipalities essentially want bailouts to pay off debts from their prolonged shutdowns (among other things). So far, President Trump has said he doesn’t want poorly-run states to be subsidized by better-run states (though, if Democrats sweep in the upcoming elections, that’s likely to be exactly what happens).

Oh, and the notion that the Red States have been irresponsible by not being as strict and by opening up quicker has thus far not been seen in the fatality data: the Blue States have suffered 40% more deaths per million residents than Red States.

And the notion that population density is the reason for this disparity may also be turning out not to be the case, as recent studies have found that population density (e.g. people per square mile) is not the driver of higher death rates.

Someone should get this info to Tha Destroya.

Also, did you make this yourself, or where did you find it? It's good info and should be put in the face of every idiot politician still requiring strict guidelines. Instead, they all think they know what's best for each individual out there and look down on anyone who wants to get back to some normal as "dumb and uninformed" or as in the case of the SEC states "dumb southerners". frick those people especially.

After looking at those numbers, Louisiana COVID deaths per million number has got to be inflated and incorrect.

Any governor or mayor that still supports their economy being restricted should be exiled to Siberia.

Large unhealthy afro american population and large unhealthy white population causes those two runaway numbers in Louisiana and Mississippi.

There's a difference in a state being red or blue and the type of governor they have in office. I'd expect you to know that. I don't know why I do though.

wait so they are identifying ‘blue’ or ‘red’ by who they voted in the presidential election although the president has zero to do with the COVID or economic response of COVID by state officials.

Swing and miss. McMaster is Republican. I’m to lazy to check your work on the others but missing this one makes you lose credibility.

According to the Department of Labor, less than a month ago, 9 out of the top 10 states with the highest unemployment (including DC and Puerto Rico) are Democrat led including Louisiana at #5. Georgia is the only Republican state.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending September 26 were in Hawaii (17.9), California (16.1), Nevada (12.5), Puerto Rico (10.5), Louisiana (10.3), Georgia (10.1), New York (10.0), District of Columbia (9.1), Michigan (9.0), and New Mexico (8.8).

Louisiana had 155,586 continued unemployment claims October 3 and 134,089 on continued pandemic unemployment. 19,413 people here filed a new claim last. Over 300,000 in Louisiana on some kind of unemployment. LINK

Rather than consider meaningful categorization criteria like how the states are run and by who, or how early and hard hit they were by covid, or any of the numerous other factors that actually have any meaning, we categorized based on their presidential voting record, and we went with 4 elections instead of 3 or 5 because 4 is a nice number for these things, and we call ourselves "Unbiased America" to add more weight to our opinion.

So is the president responsible for COVID response and economic fall out, or not? Confused?

That is not an accurate number for Louisiana’s unemployment. It’s higher than 7.6%.

Louisiana has about 4.6 million people and not everyone is part of the labor force. Over 300,000 filed for unemployment last week. The unemployment rate is the amount of people unemployed that are part of the labor force not the entire population.

It is by far more of a local issue now. Sure, the states have guidelines but why do you think the Saints are threatening to play in BR? Destroya alone is causing that.
