So what exactly does it mean that the loans are "forgiven?"

Did the lending institutions say that the loans do not need to be paid back?

Or will someone else now be paying back these loans?

the us government owns the debt.

there are private loans that banks own, but all federal student debt is owned by uncle sam.

Wish they could at least put in some useful work to earn this "forgivess"

I mean the average art major is gonna be bumming off friends, pushing their shitty $5k a year website design business, and spending money on booze as fast as it hits their pockets

317,000 people were able to "borrow" a collective $6.1 billion to attend Art Institutes?

What a fricking country!

Yep. When they join reality and admit that liberal arts and feminine study majors are unproductive and are forced to work for Amazon or Google, they can afford to whittle that debt down.

Instead, those with architectural, engineering, law and medical degrees will be taxed into oblivion on down the line to repay the debts of idiots with no perspective or foresight... As will those of us with no college degrees who have busted their asses for decades to finally make decent income.

No one who voluntarily took on debt should be "forgiven" and not required to repay that debt. This sets a fricking terrible precedent. "Ok, so now you'll forgive my auto loans and my mortgage too, right?" It's only a matter of time before this argument is made and won.

Has anyone figured out how this actually works?

Is that 6.1B recouped in the form of tax revenue?

I genuinely want to know

It means we're paying them off.

ETA: What I said is 100% true, but some deadbeat frickass downvoted.

From who? The morons who 'have a degree' ( ) but can't maintain the 'lifestyle' they think they deserve by slinging burgers, tacos, and bagging groceries?

Our Nation in a nutshell:

1. Be without purpose or motivation.

2. Decide to pursue a worthless degree.

3. Decide to attend a shite for-profit "college".

4. Run up on-average, $20,000 in debt at shite college.

5. Complain about how "the system is against you" when you find out your shite degree cost you a shite-ton of money that your current shite job can't pay off.

6. Have your shite president pay for your shitty decisions by putting more burden on the backs of people that work hard at contributing to society.

That’s 19,242 and some change for an art degree! You should have to get a degree that’s actually useful in society and the gov will pay if you commit 4 years at the discretion of where your degree is needed.
You join the military at get the GI bill. Same concept.

I'd love to know what percentage of the 317,000 even got the useless "degree."

I'd bet my house it's something less than 25%.

If Trump was doing this the media would be screaming that he's breaking norms and buying votes.
